Forums - Gaming - It appears the FFVII Remake is moving towards more mainstream.

As a general rule, I've always believed that a real time action based battle system has a more mainsteam appeal than turned based.  And with the FFVII Remake coming our way soon, Tetsuya Nomuta just confirmed an action based battle system.

"Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed that the combat system in the hotly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 will indeed be action-based.

Speaking in an interview with the latest Famitsu magazine (via NeoGAF), Nomura-san cleared up previous reports that erroneously suggested the title would support a command-based combat system that echoes the original 1997 version of the seminal JRPG. This ties in with what the team had said previously in regards to Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s combat, although non-action fans shouldn’t be concerned, apparently."

Now, I have nothing against action based games, but what helped set FFVII apart for its time was that it was a turned based rpg among more mainstream genres such as platforming (Crash), action adventure (Tomb Raider), fighting (Tekken), and racing (Ridge Racer).  There's no reason why SE cannot employ an updated or revamped turned based battle system for the remake to help cater to its fans.

I wouldn't count it as a real remake than. It's only a remake, on the story end. I'd call it reimagining.

That was then this is now. Action based is popular nowadays

Poor premises. Action based has always been popular.

We always knew this, but it seens to me its something similar to what we have in FFXIV maybe where you kinda have a turn its just that your turn comes up very often. The menus on the left of all screen shots do sugest that, since there are commands to choose there and an ATB gauge.

Id rather it be command base, this notion that command base games aren't mainstream is stupid, the best selling FFs are command base and one of the most sucessfull titles to come out of Square in years has been Bravely Default, exactly because it does what the company is good at, the quality of Squares games declined once they decided they were too cool for turnbased.

You are getting things mixed up, remakes include changes, they basicaly use the original as a guideline and rework it from the ground up. What you wanted was a remaster if you did not want anything to change at all.

FFVII was always mainstream.

Action based >>> Turnbased nowadays. (In terms of popularity)

Square Enix needs to bring in new fans to the series therefore the switch in gameplay style. At least that's how Square Enix thinks.

My take on this? Stupid idea, fans of the original game are the ones they should listen.

I would say this. We want games to have better and better graphics. And do you really want beautifully designed characters, almost like real, to stay in one place and wait for your command? Rly?

Traditionally, a game has been considered a remake when it hasn't changed gameplay but has touched things like level geometry, graphics, and audio. A remaster is usually when you just increase the quality of assets without really touching the almost at all. That's not exactly a fully consistent definition, but it's how things have usually been, and it's how I, among others, understand it.

Don't want to say that, people have a go at you for it, they don't get that a remake is meant to be that, a game remade with modern graphics but the same game.... See below.

But we have a remaster on the PC and now PS4 (remaster is the same game, graphics and all, just pimped out a bit). It's strange that for some reason people don't understand we don't want a different game, we want the same game we remember but that looks f***ing amazing. Imagine FF13 graphics but with FF7 gameplay, you wander around towns, interact with people yet it still goes into battle arena with turn based combat.

Or should i just point at Crash Trilogy and say SquEnix should take note?

Hmm, pie.
