Forums - Gaming - Gamestop goin' down? Stock price falls after Xbox Game Pass announcement

Does Gamestop need to go?

Good riddance! 40 40.00%

They're still useful to me, dammit! 27 27.00%

*shrug* 33 33.00%

Total:100

It shouldn't hurt them though. PlayStation and Nintendo players still buy physical. Xbox players already buy 98% of their games digitally, anyway.

I find it funny how Sony have done them way more favours this gen, for example they kept second hand game trading and even forced Microsoft to follow, they didn't allow EA access and haven't provided a similar service themselves like MS is doing. They're also responsible for the vast majority of their console hardware and software sales.

Yet you go into gamestop and more often than not their employees are biased towards xbox. If gamestop had sense they would reward Nintendo and Sony and push their products as much as possible over xbox.

in my opinion Sony was the company starting all this on consoles with the free games every month offer. MS just does it even more now but there is really nothing to thank Sony for from Gamestop's side. Maybe Nintendo, they are probably those where pyhsical is still much more common as digital.

Totally unexpected.

I'd advocated this business model for Nintendo Switch. Potential game changer. Makes me wish I'd gone for XBone instead of PS4. Although that would mean no Shenmue or Spider-man...

I know Gamestop went to bat for Microsoft a lot to sell their products through business agreements by prioritizing them in the past. In the end though, this is business. Arrangements will only go so far until a console maker decides to change their business model. Sony and Nintendo can push for priority, but what happens when they decide to fall back on digital as well? The writing is on the wall for GS. Not sure what they can do to adapt at this point, but they look to be the next casualty in the phyiscal media wars. They'll be a memory like Sam Goody, Suncoast and Blockbuster.

But but but but... their CEO said that physical games would be around forever for them to keep shuffling back and forth and taking all of the profits, now even coming out with the fact that they actively try to deter their staff from selling new copies of games to up their profits and keep the new copies in the back sealed up and unsold.

Will be a better place when it's gone in all fairness.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

What I'm worried about is not having any money saved up for the eventual close out sale.

Gamestops business model was a slow sinking ship with everyone going digital. Same reason why Target is in trouble now too.

This one is worrying to me. I've started going to Target now that I make way way more money than I used to. I'd rather pay more then deal with the crap at Walmart that goes on. With Target gone they'll be nothing to compare to it other than Walmart.

This is one thing that bothers me is them trying to sell me used games when I want new. Sometimes I'm trying to support the dev so I buy new on purpose. One time the guy tried to do it without even saying anything to me but I noticed when the price was cheaper. He was like "oh I just assumed you wanted the cheaper game". I said "why cause I look black (I'm dominican)". The guy got so flustered and red immediately it was hilarious.  Not to mention I'm pretty jacked, it was the middle of summer, and I was wearing my tank top just after a workout so I was pumped and everything. I just started laughing though and told him I was joking but that I do want the new copy not a used one.
