One successful system is better than one succesful and one failure though. It's just about about the raw number. I think that comparison is silly.

I don't really understand what you mean.  What it's about, in business, is the bottom line.  Revenue, profit, and growth.  Nintendo, and every other corporation, will be judged by the numbers they produce and against the numbers they've produced in the past.  "One successful system is better than one succesful and one failure" is an irrelevant statement unless it translates to greater overall success.

The Switch project needs to be within shouting distance of the 3DS/Wii U era in those primary criteria.  Total units sold is somewhat less of a focus, as many Nintendo fans owned both a 3DS and Wii U, but it's still important that they demonstrate good market performance for the brand.  Of much more importance is that the Switch moves a ton of software and has a much higher attach rate than the 3DS/Wii U.  That would show that the margins make up for the drop in volume and turn each Switch sold into a high profit per device performer.  This is the strategy Nintendo is banking on.

Hmm my post was supposed to state It's just not about the raw number, not sure how I missed that one word.. with that said

Wii U might add 13 million to the total sales number but in the end it was a massive loss affair for Nintendo and while the 3DS was a success, but was it successful enough to offset the Wii U?

If Switch is the sole console going forward and it's a success it doesnt have to carry another console like the 3DS had to do.

I've always said it's silly to combine Nintendo console + handheld and think of it as a distinct userbase.

Probably upwards of 70% of Wii U owners owned a 3DS too as they were the core Nintendo fans mainly. So you can't just add the two groups and treat them like a distinct audience. It's really more like 3DS owners + maybe another 5-6 million from the Wii U and that's it.

And selling as much as the 3DS in Japan ... if you gave Nintendo that option, they'd take it and run. 3DS outsold PS2, Wii (easily) , Famicom, Super Famicom, in Japan.

Matching 3DS will be tough in Japan because Japan has become increasingly smartphone/tablet centric the last couple of years (I think it was the no.1 consumer of smartphone games a year or two ago). So if Switch can keep pace with the 3DS in Japan over the long haul, Nintendo I imagine would be very happy with that given that Switch is entering a tougher market than 3DS did in early 2011 (smartphone games weren't as prevalent then).

is there any way you can add in Wii U & 3DS numbers for the following weeks so we can see what Switch is up against?
