Forums - Sony - Will Sony ever put PS2 BC in the 40gb?

yea the 40gb has been the ps3s highest selling sku(i think), but i really think it would boost sales, even if it is crappy software emulation. all they hve to do is release a simple firmware update. i dnt think it would cost em anything

It would cost a bit to put some technicians on software emulation for a few months, but its not like it would be that hard. Or that costly.

I wish they would just do it and have an Australian price drop so that I could justify buying the damn thing.

Well, PS1 emulation was done via hardware up until the ps2 Slim was released, IIRC. I could see Sony releasing a firmware update for PS2 BC before the end of the gen.

starcraft, you have no idea how the GSX works. Its both nearly impossible to explain and replicate in software. All the emulators for the PS2 barely run any games and are constantly updated to support more games.

If it were a simple matter, I'm sure they would have done it before launching the 40gb system, unless they were idiots.

Isn't the 360 software based?

In the 80gb version it had BC through emulation, so it can't be too hard. I think the only reason Sony got rid of the BC in the 40gb version is so there is a preceived difference in value between the two SKUs. No one would buy the 80gb version for $500 if they could get a BC 40gb for $400.

I would probably buy a PS3 for $300 IF AND ONLY IF it has BC.

Emulating the Emotion Engine chip is a simple matter compared to emulating the Graphics Synthesizer. Emulation is more complicated than most people realize, especially when replicating different architectures.

I honestly don't think they will get it to work. Emulation is really hard when the architectures are as different as the PS2 and PS3. I think it will prove too complicated and too costly an endeavor.

I honestly believe Sony has some engineers working on Software emulation so that when they are ready to drop the PS3's price to 300 bucks it'll have BC with the PS2 thus giving more reason for PS2 owners to upgrade, plus what the hell else would SCEJ been working on besides Software emulation and PSThree?
