They have lost a possibility, for instance, they can easily release Switch "Mini" without Joy Cons, or whitout some HD Rumble, or built in Joy Cons, in order to have more affordable price point.

Display isn't problem in any case, having 5-5.5" with 720p resolution is very easy to imagine, I dont think there would be problem with text or HUD.

Smaller device would come with smaller battery, and smaller screen uses much more less battery than bigger, and they can certainly cut some staffs because device wouldnt run in docked mode like regular Switch.

On the contrary, making Switch smaller and cheaper just for handheld gaming is very possible, and actually almost certain thing that Nintendo will do.

If if doesn't come with the Joy-Cons then how do you control this thing?

Removing HD Rumble could also lead to not being able to play certain games, like 1-2 Switch. I doubt Nintendo will limit your gaming options with a smaller device.

If you go for 720p on a smaller scale, you increase the PPI which increases the costs. And it still "could" need a redesign of text, because at some point it would be too small to read.

So, you want the switch mini to be handheld only? Uhm... then it wil be an entirely different device altogether.

You would have some kind of controls offcourse in any case. 1-2 Switch is actually only game that is based on HD Rumble for instance. Like I wrote, they have lots a posibiletes.

5-5.5" 720p screen are common even on budget phones, I dont think they will raise costs, actual costs could be lower because it's much smaller screen. I don't think it would be too small to read, but they can always put option in game for larger text, that's very easy to do.

Switch "Pocket" or Switch "Mini" would bring Switch to people who dont want to pay $300 for Switch, or dont need home console side of Switch, or just want smaller Switch with better battery for handheld playing. In other words, cheaper version of Switch and real successor to 3DS on market.

Speculation like this thread assumes that there's something seriously wrong with the Switch's design and price, so significant change is needed to ensure longterm success.

Bad assumption, therefore dumb idea.

That doesn't have anything with that, point is offer multiple devices that are part of Switch family with different price points, something similar you have with 3DS family.

The thing is getting rid of the TV output is pointless anyway, if it has the same USB Type C port, that basically means it has an HDMI output.

You'd have to go out of your way to gimp the system, and you'd save no money in manufacturing cost really by doing so.

Even without a dock it would have a HDMI output port (by virtue of the USB Type C port), why not allow people to use it?

Because removing some staffs from Switch itself that are required for playing in docked mode but they are not just for handheld playing can also lower costs, because Grip, Dock, cables, separate and attachable Joy Cons also have effects on cost.

2019. Did the 3DSXL came out on the 2nd year of the 3DS?

end of 2017: pricecut
2018: a new switch-upgrade with better accu/hardware and graphic. 100 % its coming.

I will through out a random date: November 22nd, 2019.

If the Switch Mini/Pocket/Whatever launches on that day...

At the end of the 3DS life cycle.

A Switch Mini will be marketing hell for Nintendo.
Still a portable only smaller Switch is a smart idea, my guess would be holiday 2019.

I love people on forums.

We have topics discussing how the dock is a super overpriced piece and only costs like $5 for Nintendo.
Then we have topics saying that if Nintendo released the system without the dock it will somehow cost $100 cheaper.
