Why do they have to die? I'd say do something different. Unexpected. Interesting.  IMO there's enough stories of this type.  Let the game build up the son's story so people will like him better when it's his turn to take over as main character.

I'm fairly certain they already said you don't play as his son. I also have a feeling you're wrong about the revenge story idea.

Kratos won't die in the new game and you play entire time as Kratos.
His "Son's" name is Atreus bad blood in Greek Mythology with that name.

Can we hope neither of them die? I would like to see them explore the possibilities of Kratos having to come to terms of what he did, and talking about it with his son to seek some sort of closure. And of couse, there's the possibility of co-op.

I don't think either of them will die. They've already said that the son has mechanical reasons for being in the game and you can comand him to do things. Would be weird for them to give you that and then take it away later in the game.
