That's the reality of smartphone gaming: nickel-and-dime. I wonder how Mario Run would have performed differently if it nickel-and-dimed.

This game has a traditional mobile-game revenue format. I fully expect it to outdo Mario Run in the long term.

A lot of their smaller games like Picross, Boxboy, Nintendogs, Puzzle League, Rhythm Heaven etc. would be perfect for mobile too

but I think Nintendo is focusing on big IPs and bigger games at the moment. Advance Wars would work really well too!

Idk about iOS users but on Android and for NA residents at least, we have a thing called Google Rewards surveys which gives us free Play Store credits after doing each survey. Takes like 30 seconds to do them but I can see people spending money that way at least since its not really their own money.

OT: Considering the brandpower of Pokemon and Mario, I think FE is doing super well comparatively.
