Beating PS2

This is just insane

Much depends on PS5 launch (I predict 2020) but think PS4 will likely hit in excess of 100 million by then.

~3.7million "on shelves" sounds rather high, but might not be unusual for a fast selling item like the PS4 after a big holiday quarter

alternatively I think there is a small chance the shipment figure actually includes PSVR, while the sold-through number they disclosed doesn't - feels a bit weird that the PS4 outdid PS2's biggest shipment (Q2 FY2003 - 8.8m), yet didn't break 20m sold in the calendar year

??

Not sure that's a good estimate to be on shelves. That's as of december 31st, so 3.7m (btw where is everyone getting 3.7m?) Supposedly, vgc has it with 300k sold jan 7, so wouldn't it be 3.4m? anyway, It's a massive number to be on shelves somewhere.

There are two explanations, undertracked, or channel stuffed. Given that the new ps4 came out, there could be a bit more on shelves than we'd normally expect, but 2m+ would be pushing it. It's likely to be 1.5m+ undertracked.

Some great numbers, but 3.7m PS4s on shelves/in warehouses on January 1st seems quite a lot.
I just checked last year's numbers, they had 35.9m PS4s sold through at January 3rd 2016 and 37.7m shipped at December 31st 2015, so that was 1.8m PS4s on shelves/in warehouses.

They obviously expect to sell it since they did not revise their forecast.

Thats not entirely comparing the states of the markets though........

Nobody can compare things like this with 100 % accurate.

In general, PS4 sold more to consumers than PS2 ships to retailers in given time period, with much more crowded market, and no one-year falstart. No to mention the profits difference one PS4vsPS2 is making  for Sony.

Who would imagine that the game division one day to be Sony´s life boat?

The sad part about Sony Pictures is that it doesn´t matter how "well" managed a studio is, they can never be sure to have a winning formula - unless you have a strong franchise.

There is no Bond films in the horizon and the Spider-Man deal with Disney is still a mistery. Even Paramount that had a horible year will make a lot with another Transformers movie.

Wait it has surpassed their insurance?

Beating the ps2. It might fall behind again but at the 50 month mark it should be ahead again.  Incredible.

This system is also much much much much more profitable then the ps2. Software sales especially the very profitable digital sales including ps plus are insanely high.

we are using Sony's official announcement in january, saying they hit 53.4m units sold to customers as of jan 1st http://www.sie.com/en/corporate/release/2017/170105.html

Predicted sales for PS4 for the whole fiscal year also remain at 20 million, unchanged from November’s outlook.
So I read a lot of comments about Sony not making it to 20 million in some other threads.
To me the comments didn't make sense as the forecast from Sony was about shipments. So how can we determine if they are meeting their goals by looking at sold through. This helps to highlight the discrepancy between sales and ships. Thats 2.4 million in the retail pipelines (during the holiday anyway).

So you begin to see that even if Sony sold through 20 million, you don't know if they met their goal because you don't know how many units where in the pipeline from the quarter before. If their production capacity remains at 1.4 million a month, the only way you would know that they meet their goal (besides literally reporting shipments as is the case here) would be to have the sold through at least be 24.2 million.

the most and best games 2017/2018 and strongest console for gamer.

Gratulation =) @ PlayStation 4

oh, I see, it's also an estimate by sony. 3.7m is an awful lot.
