Forums - Gaming - Switch: How Big Will Its 9th Gen Lead Be?

We all know that the Wii won 7th gen and that the PS3 and XB360 more or less shared second place. We also know that the WiiU lead 8th gen but was eventually overtaken by the PS4 and the XB1, but what about the 9th gen? I was going to include a poll but realised we have no idea when Sony or MS will enter the 9th gen, so 'in your opinion' what do you think the Switch's lead will be?

We don't know if that's true or not. Sony are on record saying the Pro is a 'mid gen' console and not 9th gen. We're not sure about MS because their messaging is currently in flux as they wait to see how to best position the Scorpio. So we can at least assess this based on Sony and Nintendo.

Infinite. Its a handheld. Sony and MS aren't making handhelds.

According to a lot of people, its more of a handheld than a console. Soooo it will get 100% market share if Sony doesn't make another handheld.

It'd be hilarious if the Switch sold 1 unit and got 100% market share due to no competition

I'd say 4.6 gig.

Rather the opposite. 7th gen was the "whacky" exception where console releases were clustered together and nothing happened for a long time. All the previous console gens were far more dynamic.

Yes, I can see how this 'narrative' is malleable but at the end of the day the Switch, whether it's also a handheld or not, is also a console. I see this as a smart move by Nintendo because they can move between the two with a degree of legitimacy. Regardless, this is a question directed at the 'console' narrative and I feel (at this point in time) those who wish to automatically place the Switch in the 'handheld' category are doing so in order to prepare the way for future 'Versus' discussions.

Generation means a power leap, Switch is inferior to Xbox One to it should count as 7.5 Gen, Ps4 Pro and Scorpio are 9th gen not Switch lmao

Switch is a up console but with a great concept and very powerfull for handheld, that alone will make it sell alot.

I couldn't disagree more. A gen is a gen and I know many people like to attribute 'power' as the deciding factor but it's not, and I suspect people like yourself (no insult intended) deep down know this to be true. Just because Nintendo approach the gens in a different way to Sony and MS doesn't change things. I was rather hoping for a straight forward answer and unfortunately I'm already seeing partisan thinking. The 9th gen starts with the Switch, regardless of how Sony fans or MS fans want to look at it.

Nintendo will have a lead. What will that be?

edit: I just notice I put 'gig' instead of 'big'! How ironic is that? LOL
