Wii U production ends in Japan

Wii U production has ended in Japan. Nintendo’s official Japanese website confirms that production on both the Wii U Splaton Set and Wii U Premium Set, the only available Wii U models, has come to a close.

Back in November, we reported that production would end soon. That “soon” ended up being close to three months.

Wii U first launched in Japan on December 8, 2012.

Im glad Splatoon is still the best selling home console game this gen in there! Hopefully the Switch will be better for Nintendo in Japan.

Shame, cool console with a shitty controller that was mandatory.

If the Wii U stuck with the Wiimotes instead, it would have been a hit.

A really short life, but I had great fun (and still do) on the Wii U

Thought they were at least going to have a final Zelda bundle, but I guess they want everyone to focus on the Switch

I believe that's the primary reason it failed. Not just because the tablet controller was unappealing and took away what made Wii unique, but it made the console expensive.

Even now its easier to find a X1 or PS4 cheaper than a Wii U.
