Forums - Nintendo - cycycychris reviews Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Truly excellent game. It's a shame there were so many gems on the Wii U that went largely unplayed by the masses. This game deserved at least 3-4M sales, but barely snuck past 1M.

Best way to look at a game is not what it could have been if they made something else, but rather judge what they made. And if anyone plays this game they would clearly see that this is a great game. A shame that it was brought down by the hopes of a Metriod game.

your summary is basicly my thoughts too.

I definitely enjoy Tropical Freeze for what it is, but I can understand people's disappointment given Retro's previous work on the Metroid Prime games.

What disapoints me isn't so much their work on Prime but rather that they were given a task Nintendo has numerous teams well suited for.  Although I do wish they would do a new Prime game.

Yeah, exactly, almost any EAD team could have made a DK sidescroller, Retro could've been much better used to something a less Nintendo-ish.

It's a great game but I would imagine a bit boring in single player. Definitely a multiplayer game, same as 3d world, couldn't imagine sitting g through that by yourself.

I read somewhere that Nintendo asked Retro for a new IP but Retro said they wasn't finished with DK yet,  apparently nintendo allowed them the freedom to work on what they wished so DKTF was born

It's common thought by fans that Retro was forced by Nintendo to do this game, instead of being by choice. I doubt we will ever know, its just a bit puzzling to me that they were interested in making another one of these games. I read before that a lot of the old retro staff left when TP went into production, so that doesn't bring too much confidence that they did it by choice.

I just hope that they are currently working on a new IP. But there was a rumor going around that Nintendo denied Retros first 2 pitches for there newest game, so I wouldn't say they have creative freedom.

Well there's creative freedom and then there's quality control.  Sometimes ideas are just bad, even if they're from good developers.  We'll never know for sure.
I think the bigger complaint isn't that they did it by choice but rather maybe Nintendo should have encouraged them to work outside of genres Nintendo has covered quite thoroughly

Ah ha!! Told you guys! Even this reviewer hates the difficutly and thinks it has lacks of check points...

I've played 87 hours of Tropical Freeze and never have I even touched the multiplayer.

I don't want another player getting in the way of me enjoying the game.

Back in the Gamecube days, Nintendo rejected and cancelled 3 projects Retro was actually in production of.
