Forums - Nintendo - So why isn't Fire Emblem Echoes on the Switch?

Because they are doing as fast as they can on an already proved engine. Also, it has a bigger installbase by default. Finally, Switch is getting the next mainline game next year.

Seems obvious to me. They are making a new game for Switch at the same time. Switch games will use much higher quality assets than 3DS games (seriously, it's a jump from like 240p or something to likely 1080p for Fire Emblem in docked mode).

I just don't see this as an either-or situation. Making the engine and assets for Fire Emblem Switch will take a while. Designing a brand new game also takes a while. Reusing the tried and true Awakening/Fates engine to produce a remake of an old game would not take as long.

Basically it was near in the development for a while. Rather than resources up-porting a game (which fans would just complain it hurts the sales of the Switch) they could have used developing a brand new game in time for next year; they chose to just do what they did.

Also I don't really recall a single port from 3DS to Wii U but I can recall several the other way around off the top of my head. Down-porting is easier and cheaper than up-porting.

I agree. Fates and Awakening look outstanding on the 3DS. Especially with the benefit of the 3D turned on.

They don't strike me as games that would scale up well to 720p or 1080p without some serious work.

Because it would look like a cheap port of a handheld game.

What will be more troubling is if the Switch release gets a 3DS downgrade like the "Warriors" titles and Mario Maker/Smash/Yoshi. I'm starting to smell some stink behind the unified platform logic.

Either Nintendo is being careful not to kill the 3DS in fear of Switch's failure... or they intend on having a separate portable line. To me, the entire reason for creating a hybrid was to be able to devote all teams to same platform. If they keep diverting resources to 3DS ports, they are killing the major business angle of the Switch.

Maybe their Idea is to be able to downport stuff to the new 3DS but not upport anything? In wich case, yeah that's sort of bullshit.

If its also on Switch, they wouldn't reveal it now. Because it would still have been in development.

A little bit. :P

Not sure how active I'll be, just wanted to talk about the news a bit... sort of wary of the vibe around here.

They would basically need to develop for 2 completely different systems

Unlike FE Warriors, Hyrule Warriors Legends is on the 3DS and Fire Emblem hasn't been on home consoles since the Wii
