Personally if I'm given the option to choose a gender whether it's a male or female Link, I don't see an issue with it.  Shepard from Mass Effect, anyone?

This. Link is an androgynous guy anyway, and doesn't really say anything or act on his own, so he's meant to be a stand-in for the player. Making him female doesn't really do anything for a character like that, and it's really just a waste of time.

If there is a female main, it should be someone like Impa or Zelda (Sheik persona even). Link is male, deal with it and move on.
