That's the context he was speaking from anyway. Otherwise, charging for what is already an inconvenience would be too absurd to be true lol |
This is what I think as well. I initially thought prior to the presentation that online gaming was not going to be part of the subscription service. Now I'm curious as if there is going to be two tiers for the online service. A standard rate which includes gaming and a premium tier which I'm guessing might be a little on the pricey side.
I think the reason Nintendo announced paid subscription at the event and didn't show off anything is because they didn't want the consumer to buy the system and think online features were free. They wanted to show everything the hardware can do out of the box day one. Reveal news slowly to the consumer rather than them having expectations of whatever paid features. I think it's entirely possible that many games were not shown at the presentation because of content using features that requires "online interaction".
Could you imagine the backlash from Nintendo fans if they announced online subscription at E3 AFTER Nintendo fan's brought the system? It would be a disaster. It's true a lot of consumers and hardcore gamers wouldn't be phased since they expect it on other platforms, but the meltdown with the Nintendo community here on VGchartz would be insane. This would be their version of the Xbox One reveal disaster. Nintendo dodged a very large bullet that day and I'd imagine it took a lot for them to speak about features they do not wish to talk about at this point in time.
