Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo will charge $$$ for the smartphone app required for Switch Online?

What do you think of this?

Absurd! Should be free! 44 60.27%

I'll happily pay for this app 8 10.96%

I won't buy the Switch, so I don't care 21 28.77%

It might be that you will get a complete version if you have a subscription (this fall). The limited summer version is probably an early version, and free for now as the online services will be free at the time too.

Maybe they should do like a custom version of this subscription. Like you tick the stuff you want to pay for (Just playing online, not having the ability to chat with people, having access to free games) then the price would depend on what you selected. Then it will just multiply in terms of how many months you want.

Pocky Lover Boy!

I have a feeling that part of the thinking behind this move was to integrate mobile with the Switch ecosystem, My Nintendo tracks apps like Miitomo and PGO after all. The strange thing is that this unorthodox approach can actually end up working well because everyone has a Smart phone of some sort and people love using them for everything now days from instant messengers to ordering food.

I think the app is trying to aim to insert itself into that infrastructure alongside the likes of whatsapp and so on.

Seems pointless to me, i don't think i'm going to subscribe this awkwardly weird service. Pfft whatever, local-player anyway.

Looking at the article, I believe it's part of their paid online services, which is to say you cannot use it unless you're an online subscriber and they're letting you test it like they plan to allow people to use their other online services for a time.

That's the context he was speaking from anyway. Otherwise, charging for what is already an inconvenience would be too absurd to be true lol

This is what I think as well. I initially thought prior to the presentation that online gaming was not going to be part of the subscription service. Now I'm curious as if there is going to be two tiers for the online service. A standard rate which includes gaming and a premium tier which I'm guessing might be a little on the pricey side.

I think the reason Nintendo announced paid subscription at the event and didn't show off anything is because they didn't want the consumer to buy the system and think online features were free. They wanted to show everything the hardware can do out of the box day one. Reveal news slowly to the consumer rather than them having expectations of whatever paid features. I think it's entirely possible that many games were not shown at the presentation because of content using features that requires "online interaction".

Could you imagine the backlash from Nintendo fans if they announced online subscription at E3 AFTER Nintendo fan's brought the system? It would be a disaster. It's true a lot of consumers and hardcore gamers wouldn't be phased since they expect it on other platforms, but the meltdown with the Nintendo community here on VGchartz would be insane. This would be their version of the Xbox One reveal disaster. Nintendo dodged a very large bullet that day and I'd imagine it took a lot for them to speak about features they do not wish to talk about at this point in time.

Wait so this app wont be at launch. Oh my god Nintendo.

But Splatoon 2 wont come until then, why do you want it before? is not like the console launches with many of those kind of games where voice chat could make sense.

Local player too, but I like to chat with my friends sometime, even when playing singleplayer.
