I have a feeling that part of the thinking behind this move was to integrate mobile with the Switch ecosystem, My Nintendo tracks apps like Miitomo and PGO after all. The strange thing is that this unorthodox approach can actually end up working well because everyone has a Smart phone of some sort and people love using them for everything now days from instant messengers to ordering food.
I think the app is trying to aim to insert itself into that infrastructure alongside the likes of whatsapp and so on.
