Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Switch: Moderate Exitement.

So, yeah "Moderate Exictement" is a very strange way to express ones feeling towards this mornings reveal, I get it, but hear me out!
And yes there are a lot of topics about it, but most of those are either of the "It sucks, Nintendo will die!" or "Its a godsend!" variety. Well no not that extreme, but you get what I'm trying to say.
And yeah, while I'm not at Hype Central, I am definitively interested in the Switch. Here are some of my thoughts:

First up, I, and I guess many others as well, had about 5 important questions:

  1. How Powerful is it?
  2. How long does the Battery last?
  3. What does it cost?
  4. Hows the Launch Line-Up?
  5. Is there Third-Party?

So lets start right there!

  1. On Power: There isnt much to say sadly, as we have gotten no specs, nor any kind of techdemo showing the live-rendering capabilities, which implies nothing groundbraking. On the other hand we have seen the Games, with many looking very nice, though thats often the case with Big N anyway, so it doesnt tell us much. I guess we'll get a better idea of this after more indipendent hands-on impressions get out.
  2. Batterylife: Ok, yeah 2.5 hours is VERY low, while 6.5 is a better time than I expected. Its likely dependent on what game you are playing, though, thanks to USB-C charging should be a quick affair. Its far from perfect, but looks better than I feared.
  3. Ok, yeah the price is probably the biggest problem out of those 5. 300 is already the roof of our estimates, 330 in Europe (+50€ if compared to current € to $) is a big turn-off, especially as there is no pack in game. One can make the argument that a higher starting price leaves room to lower the price without going too far to quick, maybe down to around 250 - 280 for holidays and to 200 - 240 a year later. And no, just starting at a lower price is not necessarily the better idea! Substantial Price Drops are much more of a Psychological trick, but you need a higher price to do it! (Here is an exellent Explanation of the whole topic!) The bigger Problem are the laughable overpriced accessoires and the fact that online will cost with only little incentives. While this could mean a much better and modern online system, considering we are talking about Nintendo I'll believe it when I see it...
  4. The Launch Line-Up: Ok, yeah the actual "Launch" Line-Up is small, but firstly its got Zelda BotW which is probably a hundred times bigger and better than any Wii U Launch title AND there are a lot more titles coming over the rest of 2017, culminating with a big new Mario in the Holiday season, IF there are no major delays! Also, I wouldnt be surprised if they saved some of the bigger surprises for E3.
  5. Third Party: This is truly a mixed bag. While there is hardly anything from Western Developers, pretty much half of Japan seems to be onboard, from SE and Sega, over Capcom, KT up to Atlus and SUDA51. Also there are some quite surprising Games in here, eg. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Redout, Steep, and what could be No More Heroes 3? Looking at those Games and the fact that several of the announced games are PS4/Xbone Games gives me some hope that Third Partys are holding back not because the Switch is too weak, but because they want to see how the Launch goes.

So yeah, its a mixed bag, while some things look nice, or at least positive, there are also several alarming parts.

In General I walked away with some inital disappointment/anxiousness due to 2 reasons:

Pretty much nothing on many of the high-profile rumors, especially concerning games: Beyond Good and Evil2, Pokemon Stars, Gamecube VC, etc...

Also the part about the third partys with Atlus and Koei Tecmo eerily reminded me of the January 2013 Direct. While that was awesome back then, what followed were 6 long months leading up to a dissapointing E3 as we already knew everything that was coming. Also many of those games took VERY long to finally materialize! (Looking at you Fire Emblem x Shin Megami!) Hopefully I'm just paranoid.

Other mixed thoughts:

The Next-Gen Movement Controls and HD rumble do sound interesting but I dont really need them. Also how comes there are suddenly what feels like two dozen gimmicks in a console that seemed to have only one? On the other hand, seeing ARMS being played it looked like a cool evolution of the original Wii Sports Boxing that actually uses some of its potential. Also the gimmicks dont seem that forced anymore: ARMS can be played completely without motion controls using only buttons! (Glaring at you Star Fox Zero! You bring dishonor on Clan!)
If those new motion controls are as accurate and good as they are advertised as, I can see some nice things happening there.
I'd say its one of those classic Nintendo situations where we will simply have to try it ourselves to make up our minds!

Another point are again the Games: It will be interesting to see how FE Warriors, Shin Megami, Suda51s game, etc... turn out, but the fact that we have no idea what they are gonna be is somewhat concerning, and reminds of things like Project Giant Robot (RiP) and Shin Megami x Fire Emblem that ended up looking nothing like anybody expected. (not necessarily a bad thing!)
In general the third party line-up feels as chaotic as inconsistent, and im curious if, and what, we are going to see at E3. Maybe we will simply not get ports of games that are already out/nearly finished but the same new games at the same time? Yes, highly optimistic, I know, but I would also never expected Steep or Dragonball Xenoverse 2, so how knows!

The Good points:

Some really awesome looking games are coming really soon!

  • Zelda together with the console in less then 2 months!
  • Mario this Holiday!
  • Xenoblade2 apparently still in 2017?!
  • Splatoon2 (Spla2n) this Summer!
  • Seriously, look at the dates, I didnt believe it myself, but most of these are supposed to be out by this time next year!

I really dig the general sleek and modern look of the console, especially the matte look, other things like the local 8(!) person multiplayer, the capacitive multi-touch screen and the fact that the console essentially comes with two controllers are also really nice!

To get to a close: I am currently carefully optimistic. All the positive comments from developers will not just have been hot air, after all those people talked about it long before reveal! While I am not going to get it at launch (#WiiUgrets) I will try to test it somewhere so I can form my own clear opinion and I'd recommed everyone to do the same, if possible. If I learned anything about Nintendo over the last years, than it is the fact that sometimes, you just have to roll with whatever craziness they are proposing and try it yourself! You will end up very positively impressed most of the times!

The new guy.

Sorry for possible mistakes, not a native speaker!

Around the Network

Pretty much agree with everything you say here. I think they sacrificed showing more games for showing strange gimmicky things, which I think they should've skipped out on, but i'm liking what i'm seeing. Will probably get at a later date though when I have more money to afford it all
