If I were Sony, I'd try to slip a PSVR in every movie or TV show that I could. Make it seem common and awesome.
Haven't touched mine in a week, though. Can't seem to get time off from work. And when I do, I have obligations. I miss it so much.

I see we are still entertaining the possibility that this is a sucess. I don't mind waiting another year for it to sink in.
Beeing sold out doesn't mean that there is alot of unmet demand. Much like what Nintendo often does with their amiibo and special editions. If there were lots of pending pre-orders, retailers would've placed bigger orders and Sony would've produced more.
I don't see the buzz of unmet demand that happened with the PS4 and it's big numbers. People aren't talking about how awesome this is all over the internet or how you must have this. Sony is already telling us how they want to incorporate this in more mediums to increase demand. But hey... i bet i get flamed like usual for saying these obvious things that end up beeing true.

You don't see a lot of things. For example that VR is a growing market at its beginning, and that consoles 30+ years ago didnt have these kind of big numbers either.
And i bet you will continue spreading your "wisdom". Like..
"Sony is already telling us how they want to incorporate this in more mediums to increase demand. "
Ya, to increase demand. Naturally. This is what companies want, that is what they do. Advertisment, marketing, ever heard of those? Despite running the risk to blow your socks of and turn your world upside down, i'm telling you, Sony isn't the only company with this habit.

Pretty much the kind of reaction i expected.
Unfortunely i am usually right. Wether it's beneficial to me or not.
And i do know Marketing and Advertisment very well as i am a professional of the field. And you know what... their point is not to create demand. Marketing atempts to satisfy the needs of consumers. It doesn't create them. Advertisement atempts to wake up the desire to satisfy those needs.
So, no you didnt blow my socks. I know you are one of those guys that wants this to work. Fair enough. Good luck.

Hahaha, you gave me a good laugh. I didn't think marketing professionals actually believed their own tripe.
Sure, I'm one of those guys that wants this to work too. Why do you want it to fail or disappear again?

Most people confuse Marketing with Advertisment. Wether you question it or not, it is broadly what it is defined as.
I don't want it to fail and disappear. My analysis is that that is what will happen because there isnt enough of a market for it as far as the games market goes. I do think theres market for it on educational and porn applications. So, there is a market for it... just not this one.

Why would Sony want to artificially create demand by intentionally low balling PSVR shipments when a) each VR unit sold will be sure to move X amount of software which generates more profit/revenue for Sony and b) they have a need to create as big a install base as quickly as economically possible to show developers that there is money to be made? In the case of Amiibo Nintendo only generates income once off the sale of each Amiibo. Sony generates revenue with each VR unit sold, probably for a profit, and then they also sell software off the back of that which generates even more revenue/profit. I don't think it makes sense for any hardware platform to intentionally under ship, and I can't say that I remember the last time a gaming company did that. Did Sony intentionally under ship Ps4? Did Nintendo intentionally under ship the Wii? What about the PS2? It makes absolutely no sense to assume that they would want to actively constrain the headset.
Sony has mentioned previously that supply is being constrained by how fast they've been able to produce OLED screens. They said that they were experiencing better than anticipated sales and that capacity would be further expanded at the end of 2016. There are numerous analysts saying that PSVR has sold roughly equivalent to the Vive and Rift.... Combined. In half the time. We know that the headset is constantly out of stock online, which isn't anecdotal (check yourself, look on Amazon, eBay, check your local retailers) (my anecdotal experience at GameStop and bestbuy tells me that the units are selling as fast as they're coming since they've been sold out every time). Positive buzz/reception is there just about anywhere you see consumer reviews. Because you are oblivious to it doesn't change the fact. PSVR holds a 4.5 rating on Amazon by confirmed buyers, i.e. Not paid reviewers.
So by what metric is PSVR a failure? What data do you have to back it up? Everything we have suggests that they're selling what they can make.

Yeah, not really. You can be wrong about a million things and one of them being right. That doesn't mean taht if tha last one turns out to be the case that everything else was also right. Sure, psvr may fail for a number of reasons, but not (necessarily) because of what you said. I went to my local store in Cyprus and they told me that there's great demand but Sony couldn't send them a single device ever since it launched. They were told that they can place an order in January and even then they may not have any for them.
Now, the whole restricting supply to increase demand (or inability to produce more due to costs) could come and bite them in the ass, but placing an order isn't as easy as you make it sound and you're by no means saying obvious things. You could be right, you could be wrong but what you said is nothing more than a possibility.

I think you'll notice the ammounts of undershipping are very different and the costumer reception is also very different. I don't think Sony undershipped much. But had they had bigger demand they would've placed bigger orders to their suppliers. I think the demand simply isnt there and they are trying to talk their way out of this one before it becomes apparant that it isn't the sucess they would have us believe.
I also totally believe it sold more than the other VR sets. But, so did the Vita.
The thing is... for this to be sucessful it has to achieve mass market. I don't think it has a chance in hell to achieve that. Actually do you know of any peripheral with a sucess story in the games market?
Wiimote - Wii Sports
Balance board - Wii Fit
Motion plus - Wii Sports Resort
Kinect - Kinect Adventures
Eye Toy - ??????
Move controller - ??????
PSVR - ??????
DDR, Guitar Hero/Rockband are other examples of how to make new accessories a success.
Is there a game that's synonymous with VR yet?
