Ok people, this is all hypothetical, but with the rumors that Nintendo didn't reveal every major feature for the Switch yet, and with the recent announcement that the new Shield device would have a steam app, i'd like to discuss the possibility for Nintendo here.
Will it have the steam app on the switch?
How likely is the steam app to being the major thing announced at the presentation?
Nintendo usually has a hard time getting 3rd party support on their home console and there have already been a number of developers that have said they (at the very least) aren't making it at this time, implying they may make it later after it launches on other devices (which is beyond stupid and will sell terribly because those games will be OLD NEWS by then but that is a rant for another topic). That being said, if they have a steam app, then they no longer have to worry about getting those 3rd party companies to make ports for the Switch. And yes, I know what you are thinking that if Switch does that then #1 they probably will have to pay valve some money to do that and #2 Nintendo won't make any money off of these games that were already purchased on steam accounts, but I think at THIS point Nintendo has probably realized most games that sell on steam won't ever be made for them. Counteracting both of those points, I believe, is this; Nintendo's hardware sales would go through the roof if they had a steam app. Think about it, us pc overlords that already own steam games and LOVE Nintendo games (but not quite enough to purchase a Nintendo device JUST for the Nintendo games) now have a legit reason to buy them. Personally, I have a projector in my basement in 1080p that I'd love to see my pc games on, and if Nintendo can basicaly combined their device with steam without having to purchase a steam box or steam link separetly to do this, it is going to be lovely.
I believe that Nintendo's hardware sales, using the arguments above, would skyrocket and that would, via profitable hardware prices (they said switch won't be sold for a loss, right?) and increased actual switch game sales (who buys a switch JUST to play steam games and not buy Nintendo games too?), greatly offset the loss in profit from paying valve for the app and losing money on those 3rd party games due to them being purchased on steam and not switch.
What I think could happen here, is that, in some capacity, the Nintendo switch could be, at least in some respect, to be an extension of the steam box initiative, which would be amazing for both pc and Nintendo owners, and owners of the hd twins if they just purchased them for the 3rd party games to play on the "big tv" and not some monitor.
What do you all think?
