Ok people, this is all hypothetical, but with the rumors that Nintendo didn't reveal every major feature for the Switch yet, and with the recent announcement that the new Shield device would have a steam app, i'd like to discuss the possibility for Nintendo here.

Will it have the steam app on the switch?

How likely is the steam app to being the major thing announced at the presentation?

Nintendo usually has a hard time getting 3rd party support on their home console and there have already been a number of developers that have said they (at the very least) aren't making it at this time, implying they may make it later after it launches on other devices (which is beyond stupid and will sell terribly because those games will be OLD NEWS by then but that is a rant for another topic). That being said, if they have a steam app, then they no longer have to worry about getting those 3rd party companies to make ports for the Switch. And yes, I know what you are thinking that if Switch does that then #1 they probably will have to pay valve some money to do that and #2 Nintendo won't make any money off of these games that were already purchased on steam accounts, but I think at THIS point Nintendo has probably realized most games that sell on steam won't ever be made for them. Counteracting both of those points, I believe, is this; Nintendo's hardware sales would go through the roof if they had a steam app. Think about it, us pc overlords that already own steam games and LOVE Nintendo games (but not quite enough to purchase a Nintendo device JUST for the Nintendo games) now have a legit reason to buy them. Personally, I have a projector in my basement in 1080p that I'd love to see my pc games on, and if Nintendo can basicaly combined their device with steam without having to purchase a steam box or steam link separetly to do this, it is going to be lovely.

I believe that Nintendo's hardware sales, using the arguments above, would skyrocket and that would, via profitable hardware prices (they said switch won't be sold for a loss, right?) and increased actual switch game sales (who buys a switch JUST to play steam games and not buy Nintendo games too?), greatly offset the loss in profit from paying valve for the app and losing money on those 3rd party games due to them being purchased on steam and not switch.

What I think could happen here, is that, in some capacity, the Nintendo switch could be, at least in some respect, to be an extension of the steam box initiative, which would be amazing for both pc and Nintendo owners, and owners of the hd twins if they just purchased them for the 3rd party games to play on the "big tv" and not some monitor.

What do you all think?

I'm kind of confused. How does having a Steam app make third party support a non-issue? Wouldn't the hardware restrictions still be the same?

Steam games don't even run on ARM devices, bro.

No.NVidia is simply making the hardware for the Switch.Thats where their partnership ends.Just because the Nvidia Shield is getting a Steam App dosent mean in the slightest that the Switch will also have.

Not to mention that, if that were true, I dont think we would be hearing about third parties waiting for sales to consider making games for it if the Switch did have Steam on it.So no, its not happening.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Hardware restrictions lol. Steam PC games have a wide range of downgrading and upgrading of what it looks like (unlike console games), so if need be, you should easily be able to downgrade the visuals on the switch until it runs smoothly (slightly annoying, but worth it for a free access to my steam games on the same device as my Nintendo games).

I wasn't trying to connect the two based on Nvidia being involved in Switch development, but rather that the Nvidia devise is similar in tech and price to the switch and is pulling this off.

3rd party companies can't lie if Nintendo is telling them to hold off saying anything that could reveal their big secret? Stunning I know!

I can't make sense of how you want this to work. Nintendo would replace the eShop with Steam and that cosmetic change (because games would still need to be ported) would make all problems disappear?

But Switch isn't a PC... and it's not like you can actually downgrade any game to any point... Plenty of games won't run on my crappy computer.

They wuldnt lie. They simply would say nothing. That is a big difference.

Anyways, even if it had the app, hardware could hold it back.Assuming the rumours are true, it wouldnt be able to run a number of games.I personally dont think the app makes sense.
