Forums - Gaming - Sony's PS4 Pro Sales Silence is an Ominous Sign for Scorpio?

The only ominous sign for the Scorpio is that it's an Xbox. That will hurt the sales more than anything else. People have already decided that they don't really want an Xbox this gen and Scorpio won't change that. Unless of course you're under the delusion that PS4 only sells this well because of power difference.

Sony didn't really push the PS4 Pro very hard. They launched it as a niche product, which is fine. I expect Microsoft to launch Scorpio with a lot more fanfare, since unlike Sony, they don't want to simply maintain the status quo.

That being said, it's still a product with limited appeal. It's going to be a tough sell to anyone who doesn't have a 4K TV, and even those people might not want to pay a premium for videogames, especially if they already own a PS4 or XBox One.

Unless they cut the lower system the upgrades will always be minority sellers.

price maters most.

I think MS should just market it as a full blown XBox One successor.

MS cant do that.  Why? because of timeing.
PS4pro is the same gen as the normal PS4, and its not that much weaker than the scorpio.
Get the ""new gen xbox" same as old gen PS4", that is how the masses will react to it.
Also Playstation 5 wont be that long aways out, and it ll without a doubt spank the scorpio in terms of specs.
Scorpio would have to be a short lived console then, if they again planed to soon replace it, with something that can compete against the playstation 5.  Stuff like that burns consumers, and brand trust.

MS will have no more need to "replace" Xbone with Scorpio than Sony did with PS4 and Pro.
AKA it will supplement it, to optimally target market with both budget and performance options.

Scorpio clearly IS a new gen platform by hardware, totally new CPU/memory architecture, unlike the Pro which was upclocked PS4.
(if you aren't convinced by comparison with PS4/Pro, the actual basis for MS fans is Xbone to which it will be dramatic improvement)
MS is making these changes with aim to be easily upgraded ala Pro in the future,
whereas half-gen style upclock of current Xbone would be tying them to their mistakes and would not be viable to further upgrade.
But technical details matter largely for the developers, most consumers will perceive XB/PS brands as contiguous with hi/lo spec models.

Maybe we should be more specific with hypothetical time lines here... When might MS release a higher-spec upgrade to Scorpio?
I would say as early as 2 years later is viable, a new fab node should be viable by then, and Sony may be releasing PS5 then.
(where they will continue to sell PS4 Pros and even w/o full compatability we will see x-gen releases to leverage PS4/Pro market)
Matching the PS5 release date with upgrade has a certain logic, or they could drop prices and wait a year for upgraded console.
If the new model is fully cross-compatable with Scorpio like Pro is with PS4, then it doesn't disrupt MS's platform,
and could make sense to do alongside dropping Xbone production, essentially keeping two models in production at all times.

No ... just no ...

The Pro will be promoted more heavily when necessary.

The PS5 Exists.

sony hasnt' commented on NPD in ages and rarely comment on ps4 sales at all anymore. i don't think them not saying anything about ps4 pro means anything specific.

we'll get our best view on numbers as part of the quarterly financial disclosures. i'm not sure if they'll breakdown ps4 vs ps4pro specifically but we'll at the very least get the combined sales and from that we can get a decent view into how well it did.

People are really falling for Microsoft's hype on Scorpio.
Some seem to genuinely think this will somehow turn things around in sales.

Sure, the idea there is equal contest, that MS has serious chance to turn the tables on Sony is ridiculous & ignores global sales.
It's based solely on 360's performance, which didn't sell more in the end, and only did that well because Sony did poorly.
MS fanboys tend to over-estimate 360 itself, given they tend to live where 360 did disproportionately well. (bubble world)
Of course "winning #1 console prize" isn't necessary for viable platform, and quality product will impact their relative success.
Ultimately the purpose of MS marketing is to target people who potentially are in the market for a Xbox console.
It would take more than 1 gen (or at least 1.5 gen in new paradigm) of Sony fucking up for most Sony fans to abandon ship.
But sure, if MS delivers with Scorpio, and continue with next gen, they will be prepared if Sony does make mistakes in future.

I really don't think it's doing bad just cause Sony isn't giving out sales figures. I do recall reading somewhere that the PSPro and PVR is doing better then they predicted. Of course, their prediction could have been that neither would have sold jack.

Just like with the PSVR and PSVita...... They are very quiet about it. But they did say the PS4 reached 50mil...... But just not being specific.

Well, that's a different subject. You are thinking of "can Xbox sell more than PS" rather than "can Xbox sell well on its own." The former is pretty much a futile effort, hence why last generation was so special. People never wanted an Xbox, but back then PS sucked so hard that many people defiantly settled for green.

And if we stay with this line of thought, Microsoft's biggest problem is that they want to be like Sony and have that one single brand that stands for their video game business. But PlayStation was successful from the beginning and even its lowest point is still equal to Xbox's highest point. Xbox is not a successful brand, but Microsoft is probably too stubborn to abandon it. Which in turn pretty much guarantees that they won't beat Sony.

Damn, the truth hurts.
