Forums - Nintendo - The Best Alternative to the NES Classic/Mini?

Missed out on the NES Classic? I've been playing my NES games on the AVS for several months now and I absolutely love the device. If you're interested in getting accurate playback of original Nintendo carts in HD, the AVS just might be your best option. Here's my review:

If software emulation is your thing, there are definitely cheaper options. If playing the games at their original speeds with accuracy is at all important to you, the AVS offers a largely similar experience to the Analog NT and the Kevtris HDMI mod at around half of the asking price.

Wait for Switch. They'll do VC the right way and add Achievements, I hope.

Do I have to wait for A link to the past another full year? Do I have to fully pay the price or do I get a discount? Would be nice to know that. Until then...jan 12th.

Rumor mill seems to indicate that the starting line-up for the Switch will be pretty bad. HD Retrovision makes some great component cables for the SNES which give a great picture, though. You'd be surprised how much better old consoles can actually look when put side-by-side with Nintendo's VC.

Never thought about that. Achievements on games from NES, SNES, Master System, Genesis etc would be fucking awesome!

Best alternative for an NES Classic is a real
NES though.

True, dat! I still have my toaster hoooked up as well. They look great when plugged into a CRT!

If you're gaming on an LCD or DLP, however, no amount of upscaling can help that composite picture. You're either stuck looking at a really awful picture, getting an expensive mod, or finding another device that plays the consoles via a cleaner video standard.

People mention the Switch but I'd wait on that too. Nintendo is not good with releasing 30 year old games very quickly for some reason. There's no reason why day 1, all 30 titles on the NES classic shouldn't be available on virtual console. No reason at all. They shouldn't have to build special emulators for each game this time around. They should have one universal emulator for each console. If hackers can do it, then Nintendo should be able to as well.

I mean, this could be the first Nintendo console where you can play 64 games on the go or gamecube and even Wii games on the go. Nintendo has to do Virtual console right this time around.

When emulators get rolled out online, they often fail hard at a number of games, which then require patches to the emulator to suit each title. Nintendo would still be doing work on each game to make sure it played accurately (for the most part). Customizing a base emulator for each game is likely what they were doing for the Wii U anyway.

Even the best free emulators bonk hard with certain titles - many games still aren't playable on common emulators in a 99% capacity... "Body Harvest," anyone? Being that people are paying for indivdual titles, these games have to run with 99.99% accuracy to not get serious backlash. The recent release of "F-Zero X" comes to mind.

Doubt it, but that would be smart.

As long as it can be turned off.
