You're not gonna want to hear this, but I feel like it would be against the vibe of this series to be inviting. I felt the same way as you the first time I played SMT4 - couldn't make it past the tutorial an put it away for over a year.

Then one day I just manned up about it and spent a few hours just learning all of the mechanics and metagame. Part of it is actually paying attention to and heeding to the tutorial, I definitely didn't. Press turns are important, buffs/debuffs are important, and fusing demons is literally the most important.

If you're stuck at the tutorial boss, it's because you're not taking to heart what the tutorial is teaching you. If you're playing SMT4, it's not a hard boss fight. You just have to know what you're doing. If exploiting a weakness grants you one extra press turn, and you have four party members, at least three of them should be using a "super effective" move to maximize the amount of press turns you get. If that's not the set up you have, fuse demons until it is.

If the boss is gaining press turns on you because of a weakness you have, fuse that demon out for something that resists/absorbs/repels that element. Use buffs and debuffs. They're borderline broken in these games. So are press turns. My strategy for SMT4 was to only us magic demons, because magic is OP, and just fill all the slots with the four elements, buffs, and healing.

You should never need to grind. Just fuse stronger, better demons. You can even raise the demon fusion level cap to fuse demons far beyond your level. Near the end of the game, I was fusing demons like 13 levels above me.

There is a boss in the tutorial!? I haven't gotten that far! XD

Oh lmao then you need to focus on actually recruiting demons to begin with lol. You just have to start recognizing the different demon personalities. There aren't very many, so once you start to familiarize yourself with them, you'll be able to recruit them more reliably. It never gets to a point wher recruiting demons is guaranteed, but it stops being frustrating.

Plus, eventually you can skip negotiations and just fuse any demon you want into existence.

I haven't played much of it. I would love a free camera movement

 More free than in SMT4/A

Im thinking along the lines of free camera like DQ8 or Skyrim or whatever. Full control

Ahhhh, I see.

It's something that used to bug me, but not something I really think about anymore since the difference is more about feel than anything else. That being said, I feel the same way. Persona 5 seems to have a camera like that, which means that the new game may as well. At least if it uses the same engine like everyone expects it to.

I don't like how the overworld is set up in P5, though. If it's between SMT4s overworld and a clunkier camera or P5s camera but a restricted overworld, I'll chose the former.

Hows P5's overworld set up?

I mean, I wouldnt care as much if I could control it without using L+R and could use the N3DS nub instead. I just dont like using LR camera control is all. In SMT4 and A I tend to use the B button directional positioning instead of LR

Not so much what I expect, but what I want: Massive shift in both gameplay and narrative torwards a more western style.

At fixed camera angles and separate from the dungeons.

Ohhh I see. I can't remember - did TMS do that?

You should lol it's really good! And the battle system is amazing.

Hmm...well my opinion isn't worth as much, since I've only played IV, TMS, Persona 4, and the Devil Survivor remakes (and part of IV:A), but what I'd like the most are:

-Ability to save anytime: This is the most important to me. I played the vanilla version of P4...and the saving system honestly soured my experience overall. Being forced to replay the same two hours, just because I got unlucky after a long dungeon sequence, is not a challenge. It's purely tedious and annoying. I'm really glad TMS and SMT IV fixed this...and I hope I don't have to see it again. Being limited to saving in certain locations is honestly a mechanic I wouldn't mind going extinct.

-Diverse party members: This might not be for everyone...but I enjoyed Persona and Devil Survivor a lot more due to an interesting cast. While I enjoyed the tone of IV, there was honestly only one character I really cared about...which is a big problem in a game with such an interesting story. I would see these tragic moments happening being the cast and...just not really care. IV:A improved on this somewhat...at least based on where I currently am.

-Ability to control what skills are inherited. Maybe just a personal thing...but while playing P4...I remember going in and out of the fusion screen until I would get the skill combo I needed. I don't find tediousness to be fun, and so I hope the option to inherit skills remains the same as SMT IV and the Devil Survivor games.

The tone and difficulty are both fine to me whatever they choose, as the games I've played have covered a fairly wide range over both aspects. Whatever they plan to do...I just hope it's well done.
