Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Switch dock issue

So I have a younger brother and we both can't wait for the Switch, but then I just realized...

Will my brother and I both have to buy the dock portion of the Switch? (Because there is no reason to have two Switch docks in our house).

Or will Nintendo sell a Switch containing the handheld and dock, and a Switch with only the handheld.

Hopefully they anounnce something about this on January 12.

I think the concept as a whole relies on the dock to make it work otherwise selling that it is a portable on the go and it is a console at home would be difficult. So I think the Switch will come with both but maybe later down the line, they will sell a sku without the dock and a lower price. Kind of like how with the 3ds, they later had a version without the 3d but for a lower price.

Since the dock doesn't have its own CPU/GPU/etc, I doubt it would cost much to make anyway.

Switch will come with dock, Joy Cons and Joy Grip.

But rumours suggesting that later you could buy dock separate, so for instance you could have dock at evre TV at home and play on whatever TV you want, just move Switch to different dock.

I think they'll sell the Switch without the dock, but not a launch.

I have doubts it will work this way because the Wii U didn't release a standalone tablet. But given that Nintendo are promoting this as a portable device, its impossible to tell which route they will go with it.

Meh, the reason why the wiiU didn't is cause all the tablet was, was just a controller and the streaming device. It couldn't come with a standalone tablet cause the tablet needed the base unit to work. The switch on the otherhand won't need the dock in order for it to function as a gaming tablet.

What I am thinking is that they will release a SKU without the dock eventually and really try to get into the impluse pricing. Maybe even make it so that it won't be able to go into docked mode at all and name it something slightly different but being able to play all the games. Or just let it be a normal switch just with a cable instead of the dock for idk, $200. Maybe $150 depending on when it releases and $200 with the dock.

I just want January to come already T_T

There is a rumor that the Switch isn't tied to one dock, which means you can buy a doc separately and have one on each TV.

I would prefer to buy a real console. Why pay for a mobile unit if you will never ever use it. I really hope there will be a cheaper version without the mobile display, with everything integrated. Else the complete Wii-U like failure will be repeated.

That's silly to say when the vast majority of Nintendo gamers are mobile gamers. That's not to say no people exist who aren't interested in playing everywhere rather than just the TV, but I think they're the minority, and really the mobility aspect can be completely ignored if you choose.

I half agree with you. It would be neat if they released a cheaper "console" SKU, but I don't think the success of the system depends on it, and I wouldn't buy one for myself.

Wouldn't they benefit with a cheap alternative at launch?
