Oh, how I wish this were somehow possible. But "it's too late baby, now it's too late."

Any console can work if you can get a library of great games for it. A library of ports isn't appealing in the slightest.
Sony has also built itself into the wrong market if it wants to win the portable war. Portables are less about power and more about short fun pick up and play games. The sony gamers who love graphics can't stand a tiny screen. The vast majority of portable gamers prefer stupidly simple iphone games.
If anything, Nintendo is the one who's found a niche in the portable market. Rather than short stupid pick-up-and-play games, Nintendo has quality pick up and play games.
I don't see it. Nintendo survives due to the strength of its IPs such as Pokemon. Smart phones did a number, especially on the younger market in regards to handheld devices. So many parents I know much prefer let their kid borrow their phone, or just load up a bunch of games on an old phone and give it to the kid when they upgrade.
I think Nintendo going to the Switch is the biggest sign that handheld market is tough to survive in and Sony look to be done with it focusing on PS4 and now VR.

One of the big problems is the library. A bigger problem is pricing. Fix both of those and you could realistically keep the Vita as is and it'd be successful.

Sony doesn't have the IP to pull it off in the west. Dedicated handhelds need lots of kid-friendly IP, which Sony never developed. Their aim with the Vita was toward older gamer--a segment which has now mostly moved to mobile.
Had they started working on such IP during the life-span of the successful PSP then they might have been in a position to continue with handhelds now but more mature games "on the go" aren't going to do anything at this point.
If Sony really tried, if they really put some resources into dedicated handheld IP, they could probably create a moderate success by today's handheld standards but they're well aware that it's not really worth it. That market is not lucrative compared to other markets and has no hope of growth.

I honestly think they have the IP they just haven't used them. Ratchet, Jak, sly, ape escape, crash, locoroco, patapon, knack. Outside of a few HD remasters none of those series are on the vita. Yeah the system got little big planet and sly 4 early in its life but 2 games isn't enough to win over the Pokemon crowd.
They just needed to invest on it a little more (you know talk with Rockstar and make a decent GTA for it and release some more occidental appealing exclusives instead of so many rpg and games clearly targeting Japan).

Hell no. They drop peripherals like a hot potato. They don't have the IP strength either.
Stick to home consoles.

Nope, the age group that it targets has no time to play it. Also, why play an inferior version of a game, when you got the most powerful console at home, with the 4K Pro?
Cellphone is the future for the Vita age group. Bring Playstation games and services to cellphones. Two devices is hard to carry when you are at that age that can have a cellphone.
