Any console can work if you can get a library of great games for it. A library of ports isn't appealing in the slightest.
Sony has also built itself into the wrong market if it wants to win the portable war. Portables are less about power and more about short fun pick up and play games. The sony gamers who love graphics can't stand a tiny screen. The vast majority of portable gamers prefer stupidly simple iphone games.
If anything, Nintendo is the one who's found a niche in the portable market. Rather than short stupid pick-up-and-play games, Nintendo has quality pick up and play games.
