Forums - Gaming - Grand Theft Auto IV rating

Remember last year when all the major players said they would never carry an Adults Only game on their respective systems. We know this due to the fallout from Manhunt 2 a glorified murder torture simulator. Where the game was so excessive that it was outright banned in many countries. Today Brittain finally gave its rating for the GTA 4 handing down a rating of 18.

Yet we haven't heard Microsoft or Sony say they wouldn't be carrying the game in the market. A Adults Only rating and an 18 rating are the exact same rating. They prohibit the exact same thing. So why are the consumers in the United States getting the shaft. You cannot even argue that its the market most innured to violence and sex. The game has received only a rating of 15 down under.

Unfortunately I doubt that there was any way the title could have gotten an Adults Only rating in the United States. No matter how much it deserved the rating neither Microsoft or Sony would have tolerated the game being given that rating. The entire system is entirely voluntary. They would simply reject the rating and apply their own. Most retailers would not object, and if they did to selling the title. Their retail competitors would gladly take in the sales windfall.

What do you guys think. Do you think the ESRB is nothing more then a paper tiger handing out token Adult Only ratings only when the game will not be a major seller. Were there an existing series behind Manhunt that has enough extreme content to deserve the rating it would be Grand Theft Auto. I honestly doubt there was any way this title could have received the ban rating.

The way I see it is that come April 29th we will all be playing a game that is Adults Only, but at least in the United States we are going to pretend that is not. The allure of money is too great, and the threat of system defiance is all too powerful.

AO != 18+

Retailers still carry 18+ games though, do they not?  From what I understand, most retailers do not carry AO games in the US.

After looking around for a bit, there are a lot of games that the BBFC or PEGI gave an 18+, while the ESRB rated them an M.

I don´t get the comparison with manhunt... in GTA you are a crimelord and kill people (just like every war gae)... sure you can run amok and kill everybody but thats not the goal of the game... in Manhunt killing people in the most brutal way possible is the goal of the game... but I agree the last few GTAs were available to way to many young kids...

GTA IV will be a lot better on the PS3. Kids will get there parents to buy them this game no matter what. Rating of game will not matter. Its like smoking or alcohol underage will get things no matter what.

1. How do you know?

2. How is this relevant to the conversation?

@OP: MS or Sony are absolutely NOT allowed to just 'reject' the ESRB rating and apply their own.  The ESRB is government-sanctioned--games don't technically have to be submitted to them at all, it's just that there's little chance a retailer will accept them.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

PS3 online experience will be better due to the XBox Live experience plagued by n00bs as has been experienced by many people I know who play Halo 3 and Gears of War online.

BTW: Its stupid having moronic governments dictating to people what games they can play.

 no it isnt, the government has been upthe ESRB's ars for years becasue they dont think it works and want to regulate gaming themselves like they did movies.

What rating will GTA IV get in US and what does it mean? I understand the UK position (given I live there) but need to understand US to judge correctly.
