Forums - Nintendo - Why is everyone freaking out about the Switch?

I get that it's weak compared to XB1 and PS4, but:

1) How much power can we give up when we convert 1080p games to 720p? Perhaps Nintendo worked out a way to keep the games running well on the go, but still not sacrifice too much.

2) There's no confirmation for the leaks- perhaps it's weaker(pray it isn't) or stronger. Heck, we may get a more console-like switch in the future. Think about it.

Nintendo was heavily criticized for high prices and low amounts of games. How should they counter that? They start with a more affordable version and make a more powerful Switch after 2-3 years(if it becomes successful). It'll be a different way to join Sony and Microsoft in the upgraded console market.

3) If it's so weak, why is there so much support?

Anyone remember Bethesda mocking the Wii U, saying they won't support the Switch if it isn't near the XB1 in terms of power?

If that's the case, why would they even give anything to the Switch, let alone old ports just for the heck of it? Bethesda is the last developer that would flip like that, especially for Nintendo.

Edit: shout out to Miku for correcting me about what Bethesda actually said. Here's what the actual quotes said:

"1.) “It’s definitely something we will look at; and our philosophy is that we will put our games out on any format that supports the games as we envisage and make them. If the NX fits that from a technical standpoint, and fits the game that a developer in our stable is making, I don’t see why we would not put it out on NX. But it’s too early to say, ‘we’ll definitely be putting games out or not.’ Like with mobile, we want to have the right fit for the right formats.”

2.) [So if NX is announced in the next few weeks and is as powerful as an Xbox One or higher, then…]

"Then it will absolutely be something that we consider. Okay… let’s say they come out and say tomorrow it does X, Y, and Z. Well, Dishonored 2 is way down the road, it’s not in the conversation. But anything that is in development, I think we’d take a look at and see if technically does it line up with what they’re doing?"

Keep in mind that the game in question here is probably Skyrim Remastered. An enhanced port of a Gen 7 game.
If the Switch can handle it, they would consider it. That does not mean that they plan on making their next current gen title work on Switch."

4) WE FINALLY GET AN HD POKEMON GAME THAT ISN'T A SPINOFF

Come on folks, we all know that our dreams will come true with this. It's taken 21 years, but we finally will get closer to our goal of pokemon dominating the WORLD.

Don`t really understand 1, but for 2... there may not be any confirmation of the leaks but come on, you`ve seen what Nintendo are planning with the Switch and you know Nintendo`s history. It being underpowered is simply the safe bet here. I personally couldn`t care less, but for those that do it`s perfectly understandable that they`d have concerns about that.

3... For the majority of those there`s no actual support. They may support it, sure. But them appearing on a list of devs that might makes games for it doesn`t really mean anything until the games actually get announced, or considering the last couple years of the Wii U you might need to wait until they actually release to be 100% sure they`ll be on the console...

4... `HD` doesn`t really mean anything. I`m sure they could port the original Red/Blue to Switch and up their resolution to make them qualify as `HD`, but they`ll still like 20 years old. I fully expect the first Pokemon game on Switch to not be at all graphically impressive, it probably will for a Pokemon game sure, but compared to every other game it will still probably look very outdated.

number one is referencing to the power consumed for docked and undocked mode. Perhaps they're restricting the power of the undocked Switch for a reason?

It's the pattern you see with hardcore gamers with places like this ...

I'm not freaked out because I was grounded enough to not jump aboard the hype train that would be derailed ...

The Switch is only getting as much supposed support as it does because it has no direct competitor in terms of portability ...

I didn't even think about the lack of a nice, juicy OLED screen until I saw it on Fallon. Then it hit me like a punch to the breadbasket. Very curious to see how it looks up close and personal.

- "If you have the heart of a true winner, you can always get more pissed off than some other asshole."

Because people are expecting a home console but are getting a handheld.

People are hyped!

Im a expecting another massive rumor before Christmas!

It's Digital Foundry. Next to Anandtech, they are one of the most credible outlets on the Internet.

They could have made a Cut-down version at a lower price point.

Get rid of the seperate NAND, ditch the battery, ditch the screen, ditch the speakers, use conventional controls and you have a non-portable version that could run the exact same games at a fraction of the price.

Sony and Microsoft have proven that having multiple SKU's targeting multiple price points works well.

The Wii U also had a similar long lineup of people willing to throw their support behind it.

But once the sales wasn't as great as many had hoped, the hardware being archaic and Nintendo's fanbase not buying up 3rd party's enough... All that support Imploded.
Activision, EA, Ubisoft all walked away.

Power is one issue. Sometimes a game just doesn't translate with a ton of concessions made to fit into lesser hardware.

The other issue is sales, if you don't have a platform with a large enough userbase it's not financially viable to downgrade everything.

Fact is, people expected a full-fledge Tegra, which to them was "Good enough" in terms of performance.
Then they ended up with something that was only 40% of the speed.

Nintendo's inability to properly communicate their intended goals is the real issue here, they could have nailed the months of rumors and speculation before they took hold and built up peoples expectations.

Some people were expecting performance somewhere in the realm of PS4/X1. I don't know why... I mean it's a console/handheld hybrid so its power will be somewhere in between a console and handheld.

As for me, I'm just expecting good games to come its way and for me to be able to play those games wherever I pleased.
