Switch supports Vulkan and OpenGL 4.5

Switch is now confirmed to support both Vulkan and OpenGL 4.5. The Khronos Group certifies the console as a Vulkan 1.0 conformant implementation. Moreover, it shows the OS as “Nintendo OS” and it passes the Vulkan 1.0.1.0 CTS. Switch is listed as hitting OpenGL 4.5 and OpenGL ES 3.2 conformance as well.

That’s a lot of technical talk, but it should only mean good things for Switch owners in the end. This essentially means that developers should have an easier time creating games for the system.

Also it's confirmed that Switch support Unreal Engine 4, while for instance Wii U dont suport Vulkan, OpenGL 4.5 or Unreal Engine 4.

The most interesting thing about this is Nintendo OS.

Basically it supports all the latest APIs which will make porting easier compared to if it didn't.

(Other than DX obviously)

Well compared to Wii U for isntance. :)

It better support as many of these APIs and engines as it can, it would be sad to lose 3rd parties just because the console can't read their coding.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

No surprise here, but great news nonetheless.

Seeing this again and again is so annoying. How exactly does Switch support Unreal Engine 4? It's the engine that supports a console and not vice versa!

I thought it was that the console needs to be easy for the engine to work with.

Sure, but we're not saying Windows support Unreal Engine either. The majority of the work done for getting Unreal Engine to run on Switch is almost certainly coming from Epic and not Switch (or Nintendo), and I think the terms used should reflect that.

Better for them to support it than go with the DX deathknell

We could also see more pushing into more using Vulkan in the long run, hopefully making it the main API to go for than the other that seemingly hampers PC and is restricted to just one console.

bolded is why WiiU got nothing while NS will get the basic yearly titles and maybe a red-herring here or there as well.

Here you go, this directly shows the Nintendo Switch passing conformance tests by each of the claimed gfx APIs ...

It's all in a day's work at Nvidia that provides them the drivers ...
