Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo officially confirms Dragon Quest XI for Switch

I would not underestimate the PS4 version's system requirements based on the perceptive appearance ...

The Last Guardian struggled on the base PS4 and it doesn't have much of the same complexities of many current gen AAA titles ...

The foliage in DQ XI aren't exactly alpha cutouts and the shaders are relatively high quality for this type of game ...

Lot's of differences between DQ XI on the PS4 and DQ Heroes on the PS3 to graphically separate them ...

It has to be based off the PS4 build due to Seasons of Heaven alone. Hell, it might be the 3DS and PS4 game all in one. Switch also supports UE4 which DQXI runs on. It should be easy to port the game to switch from PS4 as we've heard of numerous rumors/truths that developers are porting PS4 games to Switch.

Pretty sure the devs of that game said the trailer and screenshots on based of what they hope the Switch will be, rather than dev kits.

Seems like they just want to be associated with the Switch because of the prelaunch hype, rather than being active devs for it atm. That's probably why they announced the game before the event. I'd refrain from using them in any discussions regarding the Switch's power, as they seem more like an indie dev team taking advantage of all the excitement. The game doesn't even look polished if you look at the new trailer.

More importantly, Dragon Quest never gets the budget that Final Fantasy does because it's not as succesful or consistent a franchise in sales.  It's not going to get bleeding edge graphics.

Controvercial opinion: DQ11 looks way better than FFXV.

Even more controversial opinion: The 3DS version of DQXI looks more appealling to me than the PS4/Switch (?) version does.

The PS2-era 3D mixed with Super NES 2D is such a great idea and works so perfectly with the nature of the DQ franchise.

Visually yes, you can argue that; in terms of technical achievement, the difference between FFXV is absolutely enormous.  FFXV is pushing the capabilities of the PS4 objectively regardless of your thoughts on aesthetics.  DQXI is not, regardless of your thoughts on aesthetics.

I was only talking about visually, lol. I know FF15 pushes the PS4 more, but it looks way, way worse.

Even if that's somehow botched, there are numerous ports of PS4 games coming to Switch that have been rumored or verified and again Switch supports UE4 which is the biggest factor in deciding which port the Switch will get. It'd be silly not to have XI be based off the PS4 version and only do a port of the 3DS version.

Definitely more controvercial lol.

When I think of PS2 DQ, I think of DQ8, which more closely resembles DQ11 PS4. DQ11 3DS feels like PS1/DS DQ.

I'm not arguing against any of that. I'm just talking about that particular game. I don't think there's a chance in hell that DQ11 Switch won't be based off the PS4 version.

The more I think about it, the more I question exactly how exactly the Switch version even fits in.

The PS4 version, even if not totally amazingly system pushing, will still be the definitive console version.

The 3DS version will be the definitive handheld version.

The Switch version will be somewhere in between, not providing the handheld viability of the 3DS or the home console potential of the PS4. No matter which version it gets, the hardware will fail it either through battery life or system power.

This won't be a problem for potential lower end titles ported from PS4 to Switch, where a mobile version simply hasn't existed previously, thus leaving a gap in the market for the Switch to potentially fill, but in this specific scenario, it seems like a glaring flaw that the Switch version has no obvious spot to fill in the gaming market. I guess does it really matter what version the Switch ultimately gets?
