Played it a few times at a friend's house but i never bought the game.I believe it has the potential to outsell 2D Mario and become the fourth biggest Nintendo franchise on home consoles after Zelda, Mario Kart and Smash.

Not trying to be rude but 2d Mario games generally sell better than Smash, Zelda, and Mario Kart. So under that logic it'd only be the 5th best selling Nintendo franchise, and keep in mind the 3d Mario's usually do around 9-12 million so it'd most likely be their 6th best selling. Unless they release an Animal Crossing as well......
In terms of the best selling games in the games series mentioned, it goes like this :
Maro Kart(35 Million)
2d Mario(like 30 million sales, wow...)
Pokemon(30 million)
Super Smash Brothers(Almost 13 Million)
3d Mario(Almost 13 million)
Animal Crossing(9 Million)
3D Zelda (7 Million)
2D Donkey Kong(9 million at peak during SNES, around 7 Million best sales for modern times)
and then Splatoon.
So yeah, Splatoon has a lot of competition. But personally I believe that it's going to beat Donkey Kong Switch and maybe even Zelda Switch. Nintendo hasn't really been advertising their 2d platformers recently like they did with Donkey Kong Returns and New Super Mario Bros Wii.
Edit : I only tried to include the relevant games as peak sales figure above. These are all newer titles seling this well for Nintendo. Still, I agree Splatoon will probably beat AT LEAST Donkey Kong, but most likely Zelda and possibly Animal Crossing.
