$160 PS4 Headset Coming in January, Features 3D Sound for Uncharted 4

MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Days Gone are among those that will also support 3D audio.

Sony's $160 Platinum wireless headset will launch in January 12, 2017, the company announced today in a PlayStation Blog post.

Naughty Dog - Platinum Wireless Headset: 3D Audio Dev Diary | PS4

As explained in the post, the premium headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound using Sony's 3D audio technology. The headset works with PlayStation VR and mobile devices through the 3.5mm audio cable that it comes bundled with.

A patch for Naughty Dog's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will add support for 3D audio in January 2017, becoming the first to have it. Other games, including MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Days Gone will also support it.

Watch the video above to hear what Naughty Dog developers have to say about how they think 3D audio will enhance the Uncharted 4 experience. One example that Naughty Dog provides is a sequence where Drake is in an attic and Elena calls to him from downstairs. With 3D audio, you'll hear Elena calling from below, boosting the immersion of the scene, director Neil Druckmann says. Another example is that you'll hear gunfire from all around you during shootouts.

"With games, I think for a long time the picture has always been in the forefront of where you see the advances as we go from generation to generation," he added. "But audio has been having these same leaps and bounds."

In Canada, the headset will go for $200 CAD. It was supposed to launch in the holiday 2016 window, but was later delayed to 2017.

Hmm feel like we're getting slithers of arrogant Sony at the moment..

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

Why not release the 3D Audio for free via the game?

Greed.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Seems a reasonable Price, though we don't know anything about its quality and battery life.

Why do you say that?

Do you know the quality of the headset and its tech? How much is this supposed to be sold for? Do you have comparable headsets of similar quality you can compare them to, to give us an idea of why Sony is arrogant here? When did you get to try this new Platinum Headset?

Please, enlighten us.

I thought the Silver & Gold headsets already had faux surround sound...

My main issue with the Sony/Playstation wireless headsets, they're terribly made in terms of build quality, they always crack and eventually completely snap... I know this from experience after owning three pairs. Now I stay as far away from them as possible... the sound quality is amazing, but I can't be replacing a pair of headphones every 1-2 years due to them constantly breaking... they need to rethink the way they actually put them together.

I've owned two pairs (the original PlayStation Stereo Headset, and now the Pulse Elite Headset), and haven't had any issues of the sort. I've been using the Pulse Elite headset for over 3 years now and it's still as good as new.

Ouch. $200 Canadian. Then tax. I got the Gold headset last year for the Best Buy employee price last year ( I know a guy ), so I'll probably hold on this.

Sounds like Turtle Beach headsets as well xD. Went through 2 X11's 2 XP400's and 1 Ear Force Xone, they all snapped on the right headband. Will not be buying any more TB headsets.
