Forums - Nintendo - Pokemon Sun/Moon: More than 10mil Globally (shipped or sell thru?), on track to be best holiday quarter ever for franchise

*casually waiting for FW sales on VGC*

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Interesting how they could gauge the numbers to meet demand, but can't with the Nes classic.

It's Pokémon after all. Yes the NES has a place in many people's hearts due to nostalgia but Pokemon is probably more relevant and is assisted with the 20th anniversary, Pokémon Go, the overall great pedigree of the franchise, and the install base of the 3DS. Not trying to excuse the low supply of the NES classic but Pokemon Sun and Moon is a mainline game and highly anticipated at that. It's been a topic before here but Pokemon is up there with Mario in terms of overall presence and star power and is stronger than ever as a brand.

The day a mainline Pokemon game doesn't do really well, shit will be getting real XD

I put money on it, if stars is real and it comes out on switch, game will sell 6-8mil lifetime. And then people. (Haters) will call it a flop without realizing those are amazing sales lol

That's what third versions usually sell...  Even Pokemon Black/White 2, which  are sequels though.  However,  technically it's a third version with two sub-versions (  allow me that new word  haha )... It features kyurem, the third pokemon of a mascot legendary trio ( TAO ) but crossed with Reshiram in one version and Zekrom in the other one... Hmmm Pokemon fusion the next step tbonator?

Although, it would be the first time that a third version of a Pokemon game would be on the next gen handheld console, and maybe could sell like a new installment because of that... That's in case of you fearing that most who played the firsts versions, won't replay the third on next gen hardware.

I mean look GTA V remaster on PS3/PS4 and it's just a visually enhanced version!

Haha, that would be bad. I guess that would be one way to bring big changes..... or mark the end of pokemon.

That would hurt Nintendo pretty, pretty, pretty bad as well.
Don't see it happening anytime soon, tho, lol.

I do wonder though. As much as I and many people love Pokemon, it can't keep going a similar path forever.

I just can't believe how much juice is left in that franchise. Feels like it will never get to exhaustion, which is quite a feat. It's remarkable, even. Congratulations to the Pokemon team.

Not only the Japanese, it seems. The UK, the USA, it's all set for one of the biggest FW in video game history on a single console.

Well, maybe it will sell indeed 10m in 2 weeks. Especially since it sold 300k at launch in the UK, double what XY and ORAS did!

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Yeah, I just checked the sales data and you're right, it seems pretty spread out. I was wrong there as I don't really keep track of that franchise. But I don't think it should be compared to home console sales. Handheld games traditionally sell far better and bigger volume than home console games.

I think Pokemon Go was probably used as an advertisment more than an actual, stand alone game. I bet Mario Run is the same thing. Nintendo's figured out a way to use these apps to sell games.

Bolded - Oh I don't know about that. The best selling game on PS4 sold more than the best selling game on 3DS. And with the Switch narrowing the line between handheld and home console, I don't think this will ever be true again. Pokemon is just a hell of a powerhouse, I would say Pokemon games traditionally sell far better and bigger volume than other games. haha
