Where did you get that from?

the game database, click on PS4 for platform then take a look at the various genres.

PS4 total software-290 million

Action-90 million

Shooter-80 million

Sports-50 million

total of these genres-220 million

These numbers are rounded but you get the idea

What is "action"? Is Uncharted the same as The Last of Us or Killzone or Resogun?

Also, you're counting units sold instead of games available.

Well, obviously the PlayStation consoles are going to be more diverse when they sell more. I am mainly a PlayStation fan because I grew up with the PS1 and PS2 and still love them dearly.

The OP is talking about players tastes, not games available.

If you want to talk about games available, look at this list of all the Xbox One games.  It's a pretty diverse lineup with very few shooters:

The majority of the Xbox community chooses not to play a lot of those games types but it's not because they aren't available.

Same goes for Wii U:

We tend to smell better too. Fresh baked bread. Zesty oranges. Seared beef. These are the smells of a PS gamer.

I don't think it can be argued, honestly, and what sells the most has nothing to do with it.

There are genres where you might be better off with a different choice. Platformers on Nintendo, for instance, or action-shooters on Xbox. If you want a varied selection, however, or you really want some niche titles to go along with the blockbusters, then it is very hard to top what Playstation offers.

From a personal standpoint, I want games like Persona and Valkyria Chronicles to go along with my Borderlands and Dishonored.

Not sure that's true. I think most consoles gamer's like variety.

There are, of course, different selections of games on the different systems, and some have a larger selection of games, a bigger range, key high profile franchises in a genre (like street fighter of final fantasy), or a different focus, but to say that it is the gamers on these system that don't want to play a range of stuff is a leap and unfair. There are plenty of industry reasons explain the differences.

XBOX doesn't get many (if any) JRPGS because people in Japan don't have the system. I don't have an xboxone but I owned a 360, which I never used because I'd opt for my PC every time, but it still had a fantastic range of games, well beyond the shooters it tends to be associated with.

The Wii U bombed and has been snubbed by third parties but Nintendo still makes sure it has a good example of almost every genre on it.

Sony might talk about indie games a little more at e3 than the others but they all get a great selections of indie games.

The PC is of course the master race of variety by far and I tend to feel that a PC plus Nintendo keeps me covered.

I don't have a brand of choice, I have a platform of choice. I prefer handhelds to all other platforms

They have the variety, too bad the majority plays Shooters and Sports just like Xbox. They just seem to get them.

If Nintendo had the 3rd party I'd easily like them over Xbox or PS, as their first party dwarfs Playstation and Xbox by a country mile.

From my own standpoint, it's very absurd to call a specific segment of consumers - PS4 players - diverse when you segregate them like they only play PS4 and nothing else, which is the complete opposite of diverse.
