Forums - Gaming - Astroneer Dev Explains Current Lack of PS4 Version, No Early Access Program Cited As Reason

Of the many games to release since the PS4 and Xbox One entered the world, indie games have formed a major backbone of support for both consoles. The PS4 had a pretty strong lead thanks to Microsoft’s restrictive indie policies but ID@Xbox has served to turn things around for the Xbox One. However, it’s still interesting to see an indie title skip the PS4 and head to the Xbox One instead.

Such is the case with Systemera’s Astroneer, a space exploration title that will be available in December for Steam Early Access and through the Xbox Game Preview program. We recently got in touch with co-founder Adam Bromwell and asked him why it’s currently an Xbox One console exclusive and what exactly is stopping them from launching on the PlayStation 4.

Not much of a indie gamer but this is one I have been watching. Hope this will be a Play Anywhere title.

What's early access?

Think No Man's sky ;)

Looks like a VR title, could be fun. I've sworn off on early access games though, finish your game first before releasing. Either it never gets finished and you're just a paying beta tester, or more often I'm done with the game before it's finished anyway. Same reason I wait for episodic games to be complete before playing.

Exactly how I feel, give me a finished product or none at all. That said, AAA sometimes feels a bit like early access, with the debugging and perhaps some content added later.

I wish I would treat books the same way; years of waiting for book 3 of the Kingkiller Chronicles, and probably years more to go....

My favorite Early Access game is Ark: Survival Evolved. Its too easy to get crazy hooked on it so I try to avoid it. Otherwise I get obsessed and dedicate far too much time to it.

I'm kind of torn about this. I don't know if I want Early Access to be a thing on consoles. It's okay on PC, I suppose, if you think of it as paying a reduced amount by being a beta tester, but once you start talking about Early Access on multiple platforms, then it starts to feel like a money making decision. If a developer needs to go the Early Access route then how is it that they're able to work on different versions at the same time, including all the certification fees involved? There have been too many Early Access failures, as well, for me to give them much trust. EA will be going the "EA" route next.

The gap between the Game of Thrones novels broke the series for me.  In the 6 years between books, I'd forgotten too much because there are so many characters and plot threads.  I tried to go back and reread the series but I also remembered too much, which kept me from enjoying it, so I gave up.

Hum I wonder if this game will be better than ADR1FT (Continually evolving VR title with AAA graphics and plenty of dedicated resources to work on!) :)... Just kidding!

Seriously, this game looks interesting. Will most likely give it a try on December!
I like the early access programs in general.

Not a huge fan of early access programs as a concept, but if the lack of one prevents the game from ever coming to the PS4 then that would be a shame.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Devs shouldn't be using "early access" as a reason for a game not coming to a platform.
