I doubt it will hurt the systems image outside of a small, vocal group of forum goers. The vast majority of PS4/XBO games in the first year could be played on PS3/360, I dont really see how this is much different.

Regardless, I dont see millions of people being angry that Nintendo released better versions of already great games when the entire industry is doing the exact same thing.

It doesnt matter, the fact is that millions of people bought $400 consoles to play games they already had access to, most people arent going to complain that Nintendo is rereleasing some games from their worst selling console ever.
Some of these games I doubt will be marketed as remasters anyway. For example, Mario Kart probably wont be called Mario Kart 8: Slightly better edition, it will simply be called Mario Kart Switch so the average consumer will likely have no idea its a remaster.

You would be right, if the public even considered buying or knows about the Wii U and its library. That is not the reality, and Nintendo is taking advantage of that.
Year 1, Nintendo wants to sell the Switch fast and in big numbers, and appealing to the Wii U fanbase is not the right way of doing that. So all these ports make sense when we realize thay the Wii U is a failure of enormous proportions. If it hurst their image for the hardcore fans, then so be it. We will buy the Switch at some point anyway, so it's better for them to attract non-Nintendo fans or non-Wii U owners first.
Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Even still, Zorg has a point. Sony pretty much got a free pass for PS4 ports of The Last of Us and God of War 3.
