Forums - Gaming - Help with a TV.

So, i find my self wanting to buy a new TV. its going to mainly for gaming. with all this talk about HDR and 4K. i think if im going to buy a tv, i want it to be future proofed for next gen at the very least. meaning 4k, HDR and most importantly, low input lag when it has both on.

i found this tv for a great price.

Now here are the questions i have.

Does this support HDR, the one that PS4 supports? as i heard some people having problems where their tv turned out to not really support them

If it does support HDR, does it have a low input lag while its on?

i heard when games are upscaled to 4k by the TV the input lag increases, is that true? will that happen with this tv?

i know it seems kind of redudant to play 1080p content on a 4k tv. but i want to get a 4k tv so i dont have to go and upgrade next gen. plus, i get the benefit of HDR gaming this gen.

You know, I have the same troubles. I want to get a new 4k tv with hdr and 60". Budget is around 2000€. Now doing some research I've noticed that some manufacturers are still bullshitting their customers. HDR is a good examples. You got HDR10, HDR pro HDR1000 and dolby vision.
To be able to be certified for hdr you need a 10 bit capable panel. Dolby vision is capable of 12 bit panels. But, I've noticed that the samsung series 7 panels which are also certified for hdr only use 8 bit panels. How so? The have a feature to switch a pixel between 2 colors very fast so it appears as it would be a 10 bit panel. I don't want shit like that. But a lot of research is needed to figure this out.

I want to plug my PC via hdmi 2 on the tv.

But I still havn't found a good device. So...any recommendations?

I would go for a OLED Display.
I only read great things about it and it seems to be the best technology for gaming, no delay or any other problems with it.

It is an expensive tech, but if you are going for a "futureproof" TV, this is it.

- 4k Resolution
- OLED Display
- (Dolby Vision) HDR
- NOT curved

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Oled has a short longevity. And there is also a high risk of pixels burning in.

has been fixed a long time ago.

That article is from 2014 and LG claims to have reached up to 100,000 hours now.

thing is i cant find that TV on rtings.com

buying a tv is hell. lol.

As a proud owner of a Samsung UE65JS9500 I can tell you that input lag is shit on all 4K TVs. Samsung already has one of the lowest input lags on 4K TVs and it's still absurd. Even if I turn on gaming mode which disables a lot of quality options(including HDR) it's still horribly laggy.

Of course it all depends on how sensible you are to input lag. As someone used to high framerates and <5ms reaction times I find it unplayable. To the point where I chose to plug my consoles into one of my non-gaming monitors which is still miles better at 1080p.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Yes it supports HDR, but the issue is the quality of HDR. Hoe good a HDR tv is comes down to its peak and peak sustained brightness. The LGs (all of them) don't have that great a peak sustained brightness. Their oleds are better in the sense that due to their absolute blacks they meet the HDR specification while coming in at a much lower peak brightness.

Simply put, Oled isn't mature enough yet.

I'll go with a Samsung KS8000 series which is the best all round performer or a Sony 850/900d series. Which isn't even as good and also costs more. Where the Sammy shines though is when it comes to input lag. It's input lag hovers around the 20-25ms mark even in HDR mode while the next best thing is the Sony which (post update) is around 40-50ms mark. LGs are usually in the 60+ms range.

The way I see it, a tv isn't something you buy every year, so when you do, go for broke

Not so future proof for gaming
Input lag at 4k @ 60Hz @ 4:4:4 + HDR: 67.5 ms
In game mode it can get down to 34.2ms in 1080p
