Volta is set to release in 2017, Switch is set to release in 2017. The evidence is piling up my friend!

With 4 times the FP16 performance too!

And 8 times the FP8 performance!!

Please tell me that you just used Volta as an example, because the chances of Nintendo using Volta architecture on the Switch is not even zero but negative. Maxwell at worst or Pascal at best, those are the two chances, not anyone else.

Nvidia CEO just said that Switch is groundbreaking. Since nothing apparent on the outside is groundbreaking he must be talking about the GPU. Volta confirmed!

If it really is Volta, that is a game-changer. Would definitely bring it closer to Xbox One performance. Interesting. I definitely think it will be at least Pascal, but if it is Volta with 2x the CUDA cores, that really beefs it up.

Clearly, this is a case of PR. But, there is nothing insidious or misleading about it.

Nvidia is going to positively promote the product of their partnership with Nintendo as evidenced by their forward thinking (anything that involves at least a ten year plan). They want a long term partnership that will give them a permanent place in the console and portable space, rather than as an OEM parts supplier playing for bids with each new hardware generation against AMD. They clearly did not want to play that game, which is how SCE and MS ended up with AMD chips powering their consoles.

Naturally, the first thing to come to mind with the Switch was the Nvidia Shield, but that serves as a streamer for Nvidia GPU powered gaming PCs rather than a dedicated, independent gaming device with its own software ecosystem (sorry, Android support doesn't really count). Switch gives them a partnership stake in Nintendo's ecosystem.

Could you elaborate on that?

What's the difference between Android and a Nintendo OS which will be most likely based on Android.

I'm willing to bet money that the Switch is not an Android OS based system. Software is Nintendo's domain and I would be very surprised if Android was the route they went.

In fact, I would interpret that directly as Nintendo's signaling of the white flag or exit strategy to leave the hardware/toy business and enter a strictly IP/game development business model. Maybe that model would include peripheral development, but that would demote them to a third party controller/accessory company, which while profitable, would be quite a step down from their existing brand.

So why not? Piracy and maintaining strict control of their hardware/software ecosystem.

Indirectly related, as this is more of an Nvidia story than a Nvidia/Nintendo Switch story, Nvidia is rumored to be exiting the gaming tablet market.

It appears as if Nvidia may be putting their eggs in Nintendo's basket with regards to the portable gaming market.

"according to a dismissal request letter submitted to the FCC by NVIDIA, the follow-up to the SHIELD Tablet K1 has been cancelled. In the letter, NVIDIA’s Compliance Engineering Manager claims that the reason for the dismissal request and cancellation of the product is “business reasons.” Perhaps NVIDIA has noted the declining tablet sales across the market, and has decided instead to focus its efforts elsewhere."

If so, then Nvidia has every reason to see that the Switch is a success, hence the glowing PR.

would be awesome to see nvidia shield features on switch.
PC stream for AAA third parties games on steam when on home, and GG.

But valve was not on the partner list, and also that wouldnt match with switch concept of unpluging and continue playing on the go...

This is where the Shield and Switch appear to be diverging.

I may have misinterpreted the existing PR materials, but I don't see any indicator that the Switch was designed as a streaming, satellite device, unlike the Shield. By itself, the Shield is a bit limited without the power of one of Nvidia's desktop graphics cards doing the processing for dedicated Windows games. Without that, it was essentially just an Android device, which is fine, but that more or less put it on par with Ouya and we all know how well that worked out.

I could be wrong, but if the Switch is essentially a Nintendo Shield, about the only thing Nvidia needed them for was to have Nintendo IPs on their hardware, and I see no indication that was what Switch was about. It's Nintendo's hardware, powered by Nvidia.

is 1tflop from Nvidia more powerful than 6 Scorpio AMD tflops or 4.2 AMD Pro tflops?

no, but considering that ps4 and xbox one have 1.84 tf and 1.31 and those are an old architecture, not polaris, and considering that both consoles have mobile cpus it's not that hard for the switch to be on par or just a bit behind because Nvidia is using their new architecture with more efficiency. Also, 0 load times, thanks to cartridge and 0 game installation (thankfully!). And you can't expect a tablet with the power of a ps4 pro or a xbox one scorpio for an affordable price because that's a fantasy.

You make a good point here, regarding load times and installation.  These aren't things that we talk about very often when considering the technological greatness of games.  That's probably because all current consoles, and most PCs suck in this regard.

These days, it is not uncommon to wait over one minute to get back to play after an in-game death.  Similarly, it can take 2 minutes to load levels when starting a game.  If you have one hour to game and it takes maybe three minutes from power on to actually playing in-game, you die a handful of times on a challenging level, then wait a couple minutes for the next level to load, you have likely spent 25% of your time just waiting for stuff to load.  That sucks.

I recently added a hybrid drive to my Xbox One.  I'd say it reduced load times by about 35%.  In turn, this made a real increase in my enjoyment of some games.  In the scenario above, I spend more like 15% of my time waiting to play.  That's a nice improvement.  But, when compared to the near-zero waiting with cartridge games, my wait times still suck.

I remember when I got Sega CD way back in the early 90's.  There definitely were some big steps forward for gaming. But, the wait times took a massive step backward.  I noticed it immediately.  A couple of years later, the original PS brought terrible load times to all of the remaining console gamers.  My father and I (he was an OG gamer, since the late 70s) used to joke about the ridiculousness of the waits.  Like everyone else, we got used to it.  But, when I play on my 3DS, I damn sure do notice the fact that I get a lot more game play in a given period of time.

tl;dr- It has been a long time since I've played good quality games, on my TV, without waiting forever to do it.  I'm looking forward to getting back to that.

Nvidia are making Nintendo look bad, with all this bs PR. I hope switch doesn't flop, gaming industry needs nintendo to keep MS and Sony in check. but it kind of feels familiar to Wii U launch and i m pretty sure nintendo will be able to sell NS at cheap coz basically they took plans for scrapped Nvidia shield 2 and "switched" a bit eliminating major R&D cost. Wont be suprised if switch fails, they will go exclusive to apple devices.

Lol! This is nothing like the Wii U!

Look at the HYPE with the Trailer views and the Likes! The Switch Trailer likes had more than the PS4 video! A  new zelda game is at launch! Better third party support and theres already been talk of a possible Pokemon game coming to it!

Comparing the PS4 trailer and the Switch trailer is completely apple and oranges.  The Switch was revealed in a single trailer.  There was no 2 hour conference revealing the system, which was streamed by multiple sources.  You wanted to find out the first real info on the Switch, firsthand, you had to watch that trailer.  Sony had a conference explaining basically everything about the system, including specs, and then released a trailer.  It's amazing the PS4 trailer got so many views considering.  We'll just have to wait and see how well Nintendo is at converting those views into sales, like Sony was able to do.

@ OP

Man, Nvidia wants back into the console biz bad.  Which is weird considering they were bashing it for the past few years.  Also, sounds to me that they are prioritizing mobility and energy efficiency (this one always seems like a big thing for Nintendo) over power, which makes sense being a tablet with controls.  Personally, I wouldn't expect anything over 1/2 the power of the XBO, nor many AAA ports to the system, for that matter.  Well, unless this thing pulls a Wii, but I highly doubt that.

You do know that "android based" and "being android" are different things?

Android is much like Linux very customizable while still using the same kernel. It would actually be very wise for Nintendo to go that route with Tegra, which is already a proven entity for that OS. It would basically open up a big pool of already proven Android games to come to the system. That would give the Switch more leverage when it comes to convincing mobile users to get a Switch.

Piracy and quality control are not Android problems but Google problems.

If you look closer then Android as a platform is as legitimate as any other gaming platform and does not lag behind in quantity or quality of games. For example it's the platform with the most DQ games ever.
