Since nobody's guessed my #18 yet, here's the hint again:

A PS1 JRPG originally released on the Sega Saturn about 2 years earlier. Contains some rather weak voice acting

Grandia.

Correct.

The world is under threat from another world, but you know what is most important? Collecting those 100 snails

#18 Grandia

Grandia is quite possible the game I was the saddest about missing when it originally came out back in the 90's. I didn't play it until years later when I bought it from PSN simply because I had some extra money on my accounts, and discovered one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played as a result. Apart from the visuals, which have naturally aged quite a lot, and the voice acting which is exactly as good as you'd expect from a mid- to late-90's JRPG, there is nothing about this game that I don't like. The characters, story, music, battle system and everything else are great. It's an underrated gem that anyone whose a fan of the genre should play.

Yes

Mega Man 2 as guessed by TruckOSaurus

One of the classics in the side scrolling-action genre. 'Mega Man 2' is one people will immediately think of when talking about great action games and for good reason. Everything that makes a good game is present here, from a good, iconic main character to amazing level-design to great music and visuals. In fact, the soundtrack is probably one of the most memorable in all of gaming!

The game has the player first choose one of eight stages surrounding a certain theme and ending a unique boss. This boss gives the player new abilities upon defeat that are helpful in other levels and against other bosses. When all eight stages are completed, the ninth will become accessible, which consists of four more substages. These extra abilities add a certain aspect of strategy as the player could find the best way to proceed through these stages by trail and error, or sometimes, decide the order with some common sense.

Thankfully, the game features a handy password system. NES games usually have the problem of having to be beaten in one sitting, which is problematic in a lot of games, but this game includes a clever system that kind of resembles a game of tic-tac-toe in the way it's layed out, but of course this allows for the more complicated password combinations. I should have a stack of papers with drawings of codes on them around here somewhere...

Alright, a hard one. Pretty niche and obscure in one way, but not so much in another.

#16: This game is a lot like those in a very famous turn-based strategy series, but then based on a comic mostly famous in Europe and with a few stages with gameplay of a totally different genre (like platforming) in between.

Time for another mega update.

#27. Super Mario Bros. 3

The first game might have been a pioneer, the second game an expansion or weird dream but the third is what raised the bar for Mario. Mario 3 added a lot of depth to the series and the echoes are still felt to this day. The graphics are better, controller are tighter, gameplay has more variety, this is simply Mario at his best.

#26. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

A neat RPG that has more of a focus on the gameplay of battles instead of direct strategy. Options might be limited compared to future games and other RPGs but it's a fun game that sees the Mario Bros. take on a whole new kingdom in a game that overall doesn't try to take itself too seriously.

#25. Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid hasn't really aged too well but its still a fun game to pick up and play sometimes. The intro cutscene isn't too long and you are thrown into gameplay pretty quickly and its short enough to complete in one setting. What makes MGS hold up for me is the boss battles and story and everytime I replay this game I like to listen to the codec conversations once again.

#24. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow

It's Metroidvania! Except for gimmicky touchscreen controls, there's not much new here from Aria of Sorrow. But it's still a very solid game with fun gameplay, great music and environments. I'll be going more in depth with this one when I get to SOTN.

#23. Minecraft

I don't think I have to explain Minecraft. It's a nice game to play when you want to kill some time and relax. Get together with some friends and you could spend hundreds or thousands of hours working on projects together.

#22. Victoria 2

Have you ever wanted to create the Great Empire of Luxembourg? Well this game is for you then. Trying to describe Victoria 2 in a few sentence is like trying to explain quantum physics but if you like history, challenging games and managing games then check this one out and send me screenshots of your Empire of Nepal.

#21. Mega Man X

Mega Man X shows off better than no other game how to create a proper evolution for your series. It takes the base series but builds on it to create its own identity. Mega Man X features new gameplay mechanics such as wall jumping which allow for more vertical levels along with armour upgrades for X. There is so much depth and variety in this game that its simply a joy to play even now over 20 years later.

#20. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Sequels are hard to get right and a sequel to one of the most acclaimed video games is a daunting task for a developer to consider. While this game has seen a mixed reception from fans I enjoyed a more challenging Metroid Prime that also touched on elements from the first Prime game that weren't really explored such as the Screw Attack.

#19. Persona 3

While Persona 4 is the overall better game, I do prefer the overall tone, characters and story of Persona 3. Subtly is not what this game is about and overall it can be a pretty depressing game but that's also what makes it interesting. This game has many memorable points and overall its a classic RPG.

#18. Danganronpa 2

Danganronpa 2 is much like the first game in the basic structure, although with some new mini-games and now its on a tropical island. But what makes the 2nd game stand out is the improved cast of characters and overall better plot.

#17. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice

Describing VNs is difficult, especially without spoilers but long story short. SoJ was enjoyable because of the overarching story, great new cast of old and new characters, good writing and improved gameplay from Dual Destinies.

There we go, all caught up.
