Forums - Gaming - What was your *first* main series Final Fantasy game?

Final Fantasy I

I found it in a bargain bin at Revco Drugs. My mom was in line to pick up medicine and I begged until she caved. I didn't know anything about it, I just loved the whole "fantasy" concept as a child. I was like a bear to honey for anything with a fantasy theme.

It ended up being a special game for me and addressed a need for me with gaming that I didn't know I had. I wanted something deeper and more imaginative. I used to spread the map out on the floor and study it. I still have the map and the original box.

Unfortunately, I never heard anything else about the series until I stumbled over "Final Fantasy III" (VI) years later. I'd just assumed it was a one-off. FFVI almost immediately became my favorite game ever. It hit me at a time when I was bored with goofy characters and shallow narratives and it blew me away.

Because of that experience, I jumped to Playstation when FFVII released. The PS1 would soon become my favorite system of all time. It was my third video-game console but the first one that really made me love gaming.

That's why Final Fantasy is a special series to me.

So, Platina's VGC vote for best Final Fantasy game so far has concluded. I noticed that the oldest game in the series to do very well was FFVI, and that the PS1-era games seemed to be the most popular overall for a given "generation" of FF games. Since the first five games were largely overlooked (collectively, they got 107 points, less than the top four games did individually), it makes me wonder if many FF fans on the site started the series with one of the games released from 1994 to 2001.

So, I wanted to do a survey to see which of the main series FF games was the first any of you played. Since there are 14 main series games to date but polls only allow up to 10 options here, I'm going to have to get you all to type your answers in a response to this OP. I'll take responses for the next two weeks, then post a chart here in the OP.

And I'm including my own first FF as well. It was FFIV. Played the original SNES version back in 1992 back when it was called "Final Fantasy II." Apparently, there had been plans to release the actual NES FFII & III in the West, but those ports were cancelled and FFIV became the second FF game released in America. Needless to say, I was a bit confused when I saw FFVII being promoted for the PS1, but at the time I didn't know that they skipped two NES and one SNES FF game.

Okay, tangent over. Just type the game's title by itself on one line, and then any commentary in a second line/paragraph, that way it's easier to parse.

My introduction to the series.  The SNES trilogy still holds a place for me.

The first one on NES, cause someone in elementary school once downloaded an NES emulator on one of the computers, and we went nuts with the games they installed.

All I remember was getting rekt'd by Garland, and doing that stupid puzzle minigame.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

The original on the NES. I rented it when it first came out and finished it in a few days. Then I went right back to Phantasy Star which I liked better, even though the story/narrative wasn't nearly as good. But once I played FF3 on SNES (FF6), it became my favorite RPG of all time.

Later, I actually purchased FF7 when it released just to play it on my friend's Playstation and found it to be underwhelming. Haven't cared much for the series since then.

I started playing Final Fantasy just last November so I had no nostalgia for them. However the first one I played was the very first one on the NES. Only I played it on the Wii's Virtual Console (Yeah you can still buy things from there.)

I then went to 4 -> 6 -> 3

Then Bravely Default because I could not get enough of the series

Rented the first Final Fantasy on NES but I never got that far in it, it wasn't until FF4 on the Super Nintendo when I really got into the series. Other than 11, I have played them all in some form up to 13, but I could barely force myself to play more than 6-7 hours of that before quitting. FF6 is still my favorite, i still think it's a masterpiece, bugs and all.

The first I played was FFVII on Ps1.

My first was FFVI on SNES the year it came out. My favorite was VII.

I played the first on NES but I confess as a kid I was largely confused. 3/6 on SNES was first one I actually knew what I was doing.

Final Fantasy VII in 2003 I think, I later played tactics and got myself FFXII on PS2 soon after it released

After those I've played Crisis Core, FFVI, FFX, X-2, FFXIII, etc...
