Calling it a "downgrade" seems a bit over-dramatic to me. Ignoring design, which is purely subjective, the only thing the original has over the Slim is a Toslink SPDIF port. If someone needs that, then yeah, it's a downgrade. In most other respects though (noise, heat, energy efficiency, wi-fi, and size), the slim is superior. I personally prefer the design of the original, but if i had to pick up one or the other now, the Slim's advantages would make it the easy pick for me. It's in general a better put together piece of hardware.

This. I love that red glow.
Now, if you don't mind the loss of optical out, then you will be getting a sexier model with downgraded slantness. It's more rounded off. As long as you don't have super fat fingers, the power and eject buttons won't be a problem. They aren't touch sensitive this time. The new design foot pads does have some wobble.
