Michael Pachter Thinks Lack Of 4K Blu-ray Not Important For PS4 Pro

During an interview with GamingBolt, Pachter shares the same mindset as Sony. The gaming analyst doesn’t think the Pro needs 4K Blu-ray support.

He said:
“When was the last time you rented a DVD or Blu Ray? Almost no one buys DVDs –  well, I shouldn’t say that, DVD sales are down by about 50% in the last couple of years – and UHD disc sales are about 5% of the total, so who cares?

You’re talking about such a small slice, why would you build something in to a console that’s going to be obsolete? Now, Microsoft chose to do it, I admire them and respect them for giving us something we don;t necessarily need. But I don’t think anybody cares, I really don’t.

Yeah, i still fail to see why some ppl say its such a misstep.

But it's Pachter...

I expected (and still expect) a deluge of "well, that means that 4K Blu-ray IS important" comments.

The sad truth is that physical sales are flagging. I don't think they'll go away within the next decade, but as someone who supported Blu-ray heavily when it first came out, even I can't deny that streaming movies is more convenient than buying them on disc. I still buy Blu-rays, but only when I want to watch them on my digital projector, where the quality is more evident. I'm not going to pretend that most people have 100 inch screens in their homes (though more really should, for the price, projectors are awesome).

I dont really care, but the market for 4k bluray player is still barely touched. Only 3 Ultra bluray players have been released so far, and XB1s is one of em. PS4P couldv been a nice option for movie goers out there. Such a missed opportunity for sony.

I find it strange to agree with Pachter, and yet :D

It doesn't matter if anyone uses it, it only matters if you can advertise with it :p

Only console with 4K UHD disc playback, fastest console ever, and cheapest VR headset too now

Are those VR headsets even meant for games? Your other points make sense, but I haven't seen MS pushing their headsets as an Xbox type of thing. I mean, Samsung could say that Gear VR is the cheapest VR unit by far.

I still support blu-ray, yet my buying habits have decreased a lot too. That has more to do with having already upgraded all the movies I wanted to and current movies coming out lacking in quality imo. Upgrading those movies again to 4K is not worth it, only for the handful of 70mm movies. Plus a 4K tv would be a step back for me compared to watching on a 1080p projector. 4K projectors are still far too expensive.

I completely agree, especially with the bolded. 4k blu-rays would only be worth it to me once 4k projectors become within my financial reach, which is going to be years (and years) from now.
