Forums - Gaming - Have console game prices become unreasonable?

I remember my uncle bought Pac-man for Atari 2600 back in the stone age for $60.00.

I think gaming today is relatively cheap for what you are getting.  Sure there are thing I miss (but many don't) like nice big instruction book , cloth map etc that used to come with the game but since company has learn that no one read the instruction book and they might as well make money of them in the form of "guide".  Extra stuff get thrown into special edition (which I am very guilty of enjoying, I like looking at concept works and what developer was doing, or in some case what the hell were they thinking when they design the game.)

I don't think the prices have become so unreasonable.  Yes some games do not worth the $59.00 price tag, heck some of the games doesn't even worth the $29.00 "bargain" price but that has nothing to do with price in general.  There are always crappy games since the dawn of video games.

PC gaming is cheaper and always going to be.  If you feel you get better gaming experience on the PC then by all mean. For me I rather sit on my couch and play it on my big TV with surround sound.   Last two PC games I bought remind me of why I hate PC games.  The first one was expansion pack (read the old fashion form of DLC), the install didn't work of course and the patch has to be download to finally get it to work.  The 2nd game also fail and even before the install process start, turn out the disc is "missing" files and the "install program" has to be patch before the game get install.

Granted it is not a big deal today but I remember back when we are runnign 2400 baud modem and patching game was a nightmare experience so yes patching is much easier but then again compare that to my console experience where I can just pop in the disc sit back and play.

Anyway, no I don't think gaming has become unreasonable as far as prices.

Glad you agree CP. Also consoles themselves are too expensive, I would never pay more than £100 for anything except a tv or PC. If prices stay like this I'll migrate t.the PC where it is cheaper .

Blame PS3 and 360 for rising costs. And Nintendo is the savior with the Wii.

What a load.

The rising cost of games is because of rising development costs, which we all know. Since most games are developed on the PC, then ported to a console of choice, they will always be cheap, because any developers worth anything can develop on the PC. Nintendo Wii games can come out at Fifty bucks because it costs less to develop for the Wii, and for most multi-platform games that it shares with PS2, it's simply a port. Like Rock Band. The Wii version is a port of the PS2 version, but it still costs 170 bucks. And this version has LESS modes than it's next-gen counterparts... So, I think I just totally debased your whole argument Rubang.

To restate:

This has nothing to do with the XBOX 360 or PlayStation 3, it has to do with development costs on those two platforms, and the fact that people are willing to pay sixty bucks for games. Look at XBOX 360 software sales. Close to 2 million this week. Doesn't look like ANYONE is having a problem buying sixty dollar games.

When did I EVER say Wii was innocent of this?  To the contrary... $170 for Rock Band, $40 for Ninja Reflex ($10 on Steam).  That said, it's not guilty as often.

That wasn't to you, that was to Rubang.

He said that Nintendo stopped that.

well i dunno how much 100 pounds is in canadian dollars but, i only buy a console when its the right price and time to buy it.

i waited till the 40gb ps3 came out at 400 bucks, and while peopel bitch about its lack of features, its worth it. all u need is a cheap usb and flash card reader hub seriosuly lol.

then people who bought their ps3 at launch bitch about how they should be getting a discount on games or w/e. seriosuly use your brains: thats-what-you-get-when-u-camp-outside-for-a-console. lol.

People who don't remember paying $100 for an N64 game ITT.

:)

That's because N64 games ran a recommended retail price of $59.99... if you payed $100 you were not being very bright. Also the high price of N64 software is often sited as a reason for its poor sales.

not if you live in canada. i remember SNES games being $90-110

Wouldn't the simple solution be to not buy things you can't afford or not buy things you think aren't worth the money?

DLC is by far the most outrageous things, I saw a stranglehold map pack going for £10, 1/5 of the price of the game

Also, while all you Americans complain about game prices, may I point out that in the UK, RRP is £50 = about $100. Without VAT that is $83, still and extra 1/3 ontop of US prices. Of course this benefits me slightly as I can import games, but Europe is still getting the worst end of the stick.

"$50 in 2000 has the same buying power as $61.47 in 2008"

games are actually getting less expensive.

Except that ignores all the other aspects of the argument like expensive DLC, ridiculous markups on special editions, costly online on something that should be free, the lack of price drops, and the comparison in price with games that have far superior features and content for less price... Great reading comprehension there buddy.

If you want me to comment on DLC prices then give me the average price of a DLC.

No one is forcing you to buy special editions.

Why should online be free?

There are plenty of games in stores that have been dropped in price.

The higher price for console games compared to pc games is the price you pay for a controller and the gaurantee that the game you pay for will work at its highest performance on your game machine.

Do you think that inflation should not be discussed?
