Forums - Gaming - I want to talk about Beyond Good and Evil 2's artstyle

Okay, so this has been on my mind ever since Michel Ancel started posting new teasers for BG&E2 on Instagram. It's the artsyle, man. What have they done to it? It looks bland and doesn't feel like Beyond Good and Evil to me, which is making me pretty sad because this is a game I've been really looking forward to ever since I played the original game.

When I think about Beyond Good and Evil, I think about its great character design and cartoony/hand-painted artstyle, which for a 2003 game still looks pretty good nowadays in my opinion:

Now, compare it to the new concept art:

Now, before anyone says it I know concept art doesn't reflect how the final product will be most of the time, but seeing as the teaser from years ago also had this realistic art, I don't think they will change it before the game comes out. Anyways, I feel that the new game has lost a big part of what made the first game special, and this has probably happened to try and sell the game to the "hardcore" audience, which I don't think will help sell this game to that crowd at all, but we'll see. I also think the animal characters look "off" too, they have human feet and hands now and it just looks weird.

Well, my "rant" ends here.

Please share your opinion on this guys, I really want to read them!

You need to chillax, you haven't even seen the game, you cannot make statements like it losing charm.

The game is in good hands with Michel Ancel, so no need for the generic "oh noez they try to sell it to the hardcore" either.

They should embrace a more animated artstyle if you ask me. An artstyle which resembles the graphical qualities of a Ratchet and Clank title seems to be a good starting point. Those games are graphically impressive, age quite well and maintain the charm this series has troughout difference entries on different hardware.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I know I can't say that, which is why I said that it's still just concept art and not the final game. I just wanted to get this out of my chest honestly, to see if anyone had similar opinions on this. Anyways, I do trust Michel Ancel to make a great game (BG&E is the only Ubisoft game I like, thanks to him lol).

What is really important to note here is that the original Beyond Good & Evil is right about to turn 13 years old. 13 years. The game looked as cartoon-y as it did when it came out, as that was basically the best that could be done on the available hardware with whatever budget they had. Of course a sequel 13 years later is going to reflect a new art style that meshes with the leaps and bounds technology has made since the hardware the original released on.

Hell, going more realistic may help to sell the concept and ideas they are aiming for in the sequel, and even then, concept art is just concept art. They'll ultimately go with whatever looks best to them when brought to life in the game engine. I doubt this game is going to have a AAA budget either, so I wouldn't expect gritty and hyper realism in the final product anyways.

If they just improved on the arstyle from the first game it would be perfect already. I love how games like BG&E, Wind Waker, Okami, etc still look good to this day because of the cartoon aesthetic.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. I'm personally hoping for the artstyle of the final game to be a mix of the old one with some realism added in. Kinda like what's happening with Psychonauts 2 actually, where it looks like the first game but with more detail (Especially with things like the new lighting):

I looks A LOT like the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie

The first movie was absolutely badass.

The second one became trash when they tried to make it more serious than it's meant to be. Also, Megan Fox made it worse than what it could've been.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

lol a shark and a rhino in workers clothes. I have to follow this game.

There seem to be a big influence from Miyazaki on Ubisoft games.
Michel Ancel has said it was what he wanted from the original BG&E:   https://www.wired.com/2009/04/miyazaki-911-am/
Child Of Lights artstyle is also inspired by Miyazaki:   https://mynintendonews.com/2013/09/21/ubisoft-says-child-of-light-was-influenced-by-miyazaki-films/

Here is a french student project with Miyazaki influences: https://vimeo.com/124313553
