I was thinking around simular lines with the box thing. If they haven't announced what the name of the console is yet why would they put it on a box they are showing retailers since that is were a lot of leaks come from and if the name is one of the things you don't want leaked before your even. I remember the Gamecube's name leaked early because E3 use to allow the bay door to stay open to let air flow while the booths where under construction, that was put to a stop rather quickly. Plus there was supposedly a behind the scenes thing at the gamestop expo, probally only for the higher ups. Since we are now about 6 months out from the rumored release, this is when they start showing their retailer partner's stuff so they can make shelf space. (Usually its done at E3 if they are releasing in the winter sales season.)
The $100 difference could be a lot of things. One is a co-processor (aka "secrete sauce") not a fully blowen Chip but something small and cheep that can give a boost, probally from their current ARM supplier, since they could underclock the GPU in Handheld mode to help with the heat issue. Maybe a little bit more flash-memory or small upgradable HD because I see Nintendo going the if you want you can add it route again.
