Research Firm SuperData Predicts PlayStation VR Sales Will Hit 2.6 Million By Year’s End

On the heels of Google’s unveiling of the Daydream View earlier today, research firm SuperData has rolled out its official sales forecast for PlayStation VR and its chief competitors, HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift included.

Despite launching late in the year, the company claims Sony’s new platform will outpace all other VR headsets, selling upwards of 2.6 million units in the space of two and a half months. A bullish projection though that may be, SuperData points to Sony’s PS4 install base to back up its report — simmering north of 40 million at press time — which would mean that around 6 percent of console owners will make the jump to PSVR before the year’s end. For perspective’s sake. the research giant has HTC Vive and Oculus at 420,108 and 355,088 units respectively across the same period.

You’ll be able to find an illustration of those estimations via the graphic below. In news relating to PlayStation VR, a separate report by Juniper Research claims that the virtual reality medium — a bracket that comprises peripherals, 360-degree cameras and the headsets themselves — will grow to more than $50 billion by the year 2021.

“This rapid growth will arise from a widespread adoption of VR by smartphone users, and the high unit prices commanded by headsets for PCs and consoles. The market will be triggered by the launch of PlayStation VR this October, and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio in 2017 – offering compatibility with the Oculus Rift.

“We expect 2017 to be the biggest year for console-based VR revenue growth, as there are several units coming into the market which are not feeling the impact of price competition. This means we will see a rise in [average selling price] across both 2017 and 2018 as the newer models come into the market, and only adjust to each others’ presence over the course of a year or two, insulated to a degree by ecosystem lock-in.”

PlayStation VR is due to arrive on October 13. In case you missed it, yesterday brought forth new information regarding the device’s hardware specifications, even taking you up close and personal with the Wii-sized Processing Unit.

I am not gonna trust Superdata, their predictions have been lolz worthy at best. They downgraded/revised their projections of VR sales multiple times this year.

With that being said, I do think PSVR will be popular. Skeptical against gear VR though for this year

Wow those are super low numbers for oculos and Vive.

Did they tell Sony? Are they even producing anywhere near that many units for Q4? Bestbuy.ca hasn't taken any pre-orders since I've been looking and says limited quantities available. (Can already pre-order playstation pro, no limited availability for that) My preferred shop doesn't even know if they'll get any units.
Hard to sell 2.6 million if you can't find them in shops.

Edit: I guess there were pre-orders available earlier, they're on ebay...

Hardware launches never change!

will even beat that cheap & often giving for free promotion Gear VR!?

i doubt...

Oh, I thought this might be based on pre-order information or something.

Personally I have my doubts unless Sony does a PS4 Pro PSVR bundle for about $50 less than buying each individually, including throwing in at least one Move controller. And even then 2.6 million is a bit stretch. I don;t see it being adopted by many of the existing fanbase, it'll largely sell to maybe 6% of PS4 Pro buyers.

This wont sell this much i think.

Some time i even think Sony don't care at all, in my country its just impossible to find the Ps move, and italian/french/german amazon cannot move Ps move in my country, so i see no point to buy PS VR without PS Move...

Kinda sad

but PSVR is sold out so thats pretty segnificant fact to argue

I went with the Vive myself but I'm surprised it's actually ahead of the Oculus given the absurd advantage the Oculus has had in regards to advertising. I suppose these upper tier VR headsets aren't mainstream yet, so someone who's willing to pay for one is just going to skip straight to $800 and not settle for a $600 headset that lacks controllers (those are packaged in with the Vive) and room scaling.

Really, the Oculus Rift is kind of in a weird place between two quality choices in the PSVR and Vive, one for the console gamer looking to try out VR and the other for enthusiasts.

As for "2.6 million", that's asking a hell of a lot but I wouldn't say it's impossible.
