linear games can be broken onto multiple discs with out many issue, however, open word games like GTA or racing/sports games simply can not be put onto multiple discs as they will break the flow of the game. Also, games like lost odyssey (4 dvds) and Blue Dragon (3 dvds) clearly show how useful blu-ray's capacity can be when developers want to make games with allot of CG, because at the end of the day, no in game graphics will ever beat the IQ of CG cinematics. |
Gears would fit into the first category, so you seem to have missed the point of this thread.
And how do the Mistwalker games show how useful blu-ray can be? They're just on more than one disc. They would have to be broken to prove blu-ray was useful.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Lost Odyssey is stored on 4 DVDs, this games could have fit on just 1 blu-ray disc because the capacity on 1 BD is their to allow such a big game to just fit, the same thing can be said about blue dragon which stores it's game on 3 DVD's, all I'm saying is that these 2 games validate the usefulness of the capacity the blu-ray discs have.
As for gears, the multiplayer aspect is what stops the game from being split into multiple discs being that all multiplayer content has to be accessible from 1 disc so that online play is seamless and not painful, having said that of course, one could say that the game could have been split onto 2 discs, 1 for single player and 1 for multplayer, but since they choose to release all content on just 1 dvd. This makes me assume that they didn't have enough single play contentment to justify it's own dvd and their also wasn't enough multiplayer content to justify it's dvd, which is why everything was simply put onto 1 dvd, theirs also the fact that they must have been under some time constraint to release the game.
I don't think it would really matter. I don't see any benefits to it really.
Manchester United 2008-09 Season - Trophies & Records
GOW was mainly short due to time to develop assets, etc. and polish levels in that kind of game today.
Of course in principle more space does help but more for variety - i.e. a GOW level itself isn't that big, its the textures, etc. that are big but they are re-used across levels.
GoW2 can be longer and simply span disks if space is really needed.
The difference with BR (ignorning the PS3) link is that sure, if you're game needs 2 or 3 DVDs it could be a single BR - but BR doesn't make games longer, the developers have to do that.
As HS and Uncharted show games on BR can be just as short as GOW - although they may have more textures, etc. I suppose.
Funnily enough that's one of the things I liked about RFOM - it was overall a weaker game than GOW but it was waayyy longer in SP, reminding me of playing games like Unreal back in the day when the levels never seemed to stop coming.
The issue is also that many FPS players (whatever they say) clearly see MP as the main element so we're getting shorter SP (COD4, GOW, etc) balanced with a lot of effort in MP vs more effort in SP side of the game.
Obviously I'm not in that camp and would like to see much longer SP elements for my money but I'm not going to hold my breath - although RFOM2 I suspect will have a fairly long SP again.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
Somehow I doubt that the size of the DVD was the limiting factor in the length of GeoW, or the bd in the length of HS or Uncharted (those two where very story based games, and the story would have been stretched too long if they went on any further).
Anyway, they could just do a system with multiplayer on 1 disk, and sp on another, or if they really needed to, the could have a small install disk, for those with HDDs, and the rest could just play with multiple disks

I stated above, just because they have the space doesn't mean they are going to use it but it's nice to have the potential to make a massive game. Once again though, Resistance and Ratchet wouldn't be possible on the xbox simply because of Blu-ray. God I feel like a broken record. |
My point is that disc format doesn't make games longer, developers and budgets do. After all, look at games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, or Uncharted. Uncharted was the "long one" of the group and it clocks in at a whopping 12 hours, a term more commonly referred to in 2007 as "shorter than BioShock on DVD".
Yeah, Resistance wouldn't be possible on the 360... Yawn... What was so great about Resistance? Did I blink and miss something spectacular about the game? Same goes for Ratchet. Both were good games but there was nothing there that hadn't been done before and nothing that made them posterchildren for Blu-ray.

You can have Heavenly Sword. But don't you talk about Uncharted! It's on!

Hey, I liked both games. I only think its silly to believe that their length somehow benefitted from Blu-ray.

do any of u guys think multi platform games are being ruined because of 360? i mean look at it, call of duty 4 campign was damn short which i think was due to the dvd9 disc, and gta iv could be way bigger but again they had to fit it on a dvd9 disc...
