Gust has released the opening animation to Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey.

The latest entry in the Atelier series follows Firis, a young alchemist on a journey to learn more about synthesis and alchemy, meet interesting people, and pass an exam to become a certified alchemist.

Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey is due out for PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan on November 2. A western release is also planned.

How are these games anyway?

The characters look interesting (ie. cute) and they`re obviously decently popular. Plus they`re JRPGs which is cool and iirc they`re turn based ones (ie. my favourite kind) at that.

The only reason I haven`t tried one at the moment (well other than the sheer number and not knowing where to start) is the alchemy. How central is that? Alchemy is usually something I find fairly boring in games and tend to ignore completely. Is there still a game worth playing there if you`re not really interested in the alchemy portion of it?

That varies with the games. The PS2 Iris trilogy focused very little on alchemy. PS3 Arland trilogy focused a lot on it, specially Rorona and Meruru. The PS3 Dusk trilogy was pretty balanced. The games give you freedom anyway, almost all content is optional, be it alchemy or battles. Though completing some things or not will influence the endings you get

The crafting system is pretty important, but also way more interesting than it is in other JRPGs. That's the series' main selling point.

this needs to be said (for all those that go "bah its a anime style game"):

These games are deeper than you expect (crafting), and its fun to run around and gather things.

hmm, well that doesn`t sound too bad then. If I see the first Dusk game cheap somewhere I may give it a try. Can`t go for the PS2 ones because no PS2 but if it`s pretty balanced and gives you freedom to ignore parts of it then that could be alright.

Just be prepared for failing things, because the games don't ignore it if you skip alchemy, you'll be reminded of failing objectives and such. Short term consequences usually aren't a big deal other than those notices though (you may also get less money), but in the end it can affect the story and have a sadder or more negative ending (because you didn't accomplish certain objectives). But don't dismiss alchemy right off the bat, as Ren said it's there not as a tack-on to pad the game but because it's better crafting than what most jrpgs offer. It's a way of effectively controlling the effects and power of your items, rather than relying on set parameters. The better you get at alchemy, the more killer your bombs will be, the more useful your healing will be. Give it a try. If you don't like it, just explore the world and battle I guess

edit: The "cute girls doing cute things" part is what you get for most of the story exposition. And battle animations too i guess. There's a lot of cuteness. But gameplay is indeed like that third picture ^^

See now if it was more like `what I expected` part then I`d be all over it. I love cute girls, and I love doing cute things (pun intended ). It`s just that `what I got` part that makes me hesitate

Still plenty of "cute girls doing cute things" in it, go for it :)

This game series is one of those under appreciated types, that most wont try, but if they did probably would enjoy alot.
