That varies with the games. The PS2 Iris trilogy focused very little on alchemy. PS3 Arland trilogy focused a lot on it, specially Rorona and Meruru. The PS3 Dusk trilogy was pretty balanced. The games give you freedom anyway, almost all content is optional, be it alchemy or battles. Though completing some things or not will influence the endings you get
