Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto: Super Mario Run designed to draw kids to our dedicated platforms.

Still, Miyamoto said he hopes people are "going to want to play a much more in-depth and a more challenging Mario experience … it’s going to increase the population of people interested in coming to our platforms, which is of course is our main focus.

And people were saying this is some new found, Sega-like goal where Nintendo is abandoning their principles. They're just being extremely clever. They know that the moment these little kids go through the store next year and see Mario's face on an NX box, they're going to beg mom or dad for it and it's going to increase their console business. That's all their mobile plans were about from day one.

They've emphasized it ever since they talked into more detail into their mobile initiative. This along with merchandise, theme parks, films, tv shows, amiibo, etc., are going to be utilized to promote a wider audience into their products. Sure the profits definitely don't hurt but they won't be the central focus to their business.

Re Nintendo: you just have to pay attention to what they do, not what they say- Right now their main business, by far is the home and handheld console business- But if they have enough success in mobile, that will be their main business- but they have no incentive to say that until after it has become obvious to everyone else already-

I remember the first time they said this and the amount of people saying that it was an excuse or that it wasn't gonna work that way. Then Pokemon Go came and all those mouths were closed. I don't think there is any fool left that think this is not a smart movement to promote their franchises.

Shouldn't they be concentrating on drawing more adults to their platform? This seems a weird thing for Nintendo to say. And NO, I have no problem playing games that look made for kids before anyone asks. The thing is, lots of adults do and it wouldn't hurt to branch out a little.

The PS5 Exists.

Yup, Pretty much the plan Iwata layed out for mobile, and with Pokemon it's been working if 3DS and Pokemon games sales surges have been any indication.
Bring it on, Mario.

you mean games like Bayonetta 2, fatal frame and xenoblade chronicles x? Nintendo is talking about the children who play on mommy's cellphone, the kids who should play super mario instead of angry bird.

Exceptions to the rule. This just sounds to me like he's saying 'business as usual'. It would be like Microsoft saying they're trying to attract more FPS fans to their console.

Unless they have similar content to smartphone games, the draw will be limited

I don't know if you understand but Miyamoto is talking about  new customers and new kids, new generation of fans that are playing on smartphones. They're not saying we are gonna make games just for kids. Miyamoto is literally saying that super mario run is being made with that purpose. If you think Nintendo games are for kids then that's your personal opinion.
