Forums - Gaming - Welp, So Much For That Generationless Market

As many of you know, MS has been talking about a generationless console market they wish to create.  However, with Sony in the driver seat, they have made it very clear that the PS4 Pro is not a start of a generationless market.  Basically, there will be a PS5, PS6, PS7, and so on...until the market demands different.  Sure, we may get mid-gen upgrades, but they will still be part of the same console family of that gen.  Personally, I'm glad we are still going to have generations.  Makes it much easier for the mainstream consumer and there's nothing like being excited for the next gen to start.

As for MS, I see them taking one of two paths, now.  They will either promote the Scorpio just as much of a Windows VR machine as they will a Xbox console, slowly moving away from the console market.  Or, given that Sony is clearly sticking with generations, the Scorpio will still bare the XBOne name, possibly XBO Elite, and there will be a XB2 next gen.  Thoughts?

I think MS will also have a generation eventually. Otherwise, I don't get how the games will work. No way when the systems after the scorpio and neo come out, the third party devs will make games for the ps4/x1. Cause those will be too old to support imo. I don't see how MS is gonna do it and I don't expect them to. They back-paddled before and they will do it again or spin it in some way.

Even PC people need to upgrade eventually.

I dont mind generations. I think there are benefits to clean cuts occasionally, so you arnt limiting yourself by older hardware.

Just make sure you stick with AMD gpus & x86, so you can have backwards compatability going forwards.
Not emulated, or reworked games, full perfectly flawless backwards compatability.

I'm not so sure, like I wrote in the UNITY thread a couple of years ago, I think the 8th gen will be the generation when all three tried being the same, while the 9th gen will be the one where they try to set themselves apart. Differing hardware philosophies could be in the very near future.

Microsoft will maintain their UWP strategy because they want to soft exit the console business. The end of the 360 era already saw them pretty reneging on building an exclusive library, and the XB1 now has a pretty dire selection of first and second party content. With development cost as high as they are, it makes no sense to invest in new first party studios or exclusive second/third party AAA content. This new strategy always them to heavily monetise a small base of console die-hards, mostly on third party content, while generating significantly less per user revenue on the massively popular PC platform. Since they don't have to build actual consoles/platforms, but just maintain the current one, their upfront investment is slashed. Build a cheap pc, name it Xbox and ship it is a lot cheaper than the XB1 and 360 design process.

At some point of microsoft store penetration, PC/XB exclusive content becomes cost effective again, so they can maintain their business at much lower costs then before, reflecting a lower risk. If the store is not a success (recent numbers, e.g. RottR indicate this), their lower investment allows them to fully exit the market at low cost.

M$ dropped the One branding from their wireless controllers. It's just Xbox wireless controller now. Going by this, Xbox will somehow become less definable with generations.

Yeah, I think it's obvious for a while now that we're still going to get a PS5 and generations will continue. Otherwise it's just too confusing for your typical mass market consumer.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Isn't the PS4 Pro just another sign of that generationless market? Lol.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

It'll probably still happen, but by the sound of it we may get one last traditional generation before it does. Neo never struck me as balanced enough to replace the PS4 on its own in a few years.

It's an enhancement much like the how older consoles like the N64 had a RAM expansion slot ...
