Forums - Sony - The PS4 Neo Might Not Launch this year

There are two possible strategies Sony could adopt for the Neo:

1: Don't release it yet and wait a while for the chips to come down in price. Release two or three months before the Scorpio but give it more or less equal power.

2: Release it as soon as possible. This gives Sony more than a year head start over the Scorpio and also gives them leeway to update the PS4 'again' about a year after the Scorpio releases or release the PS5 a year after the Scorpio.

I go with option 2

Hope for option 2. I want Neo.

I doubt it's the same 28nm apu in a smaller case, that doesn't make any sense. 33% less volume must come from somewhere.

Yup something must have changed to make it smaller but it probably won't e using an AMD chip because that wouldn't match up with what AMD have said.

Of course it's using an AMD chip. Sony wouldn't change chip supplier mid-gen.

It's unlikely. If Sony are to announce the Neo right before the holiday season, it would neuter sales.

The Neo is already hyped before it's even announced. The announcement is enough to trigger everyone. Anyone who doesn't know about Neo by now wouldn't buy it day 1 anyway. If the shipments are ready I see no problem in announcing it next week and releasing it November or December.

Yeah the Xbox One S and Scorpio use two of the three new chips.

Doesn't this tweet basically put the final nail in the AMD-For-NX coffin?

If AMD is saying Microsoft was two of their semi-custom SOC wins for their two new consoles, and we know Scorpio has to be the other one ... well there you go. There are all three of AMD's gaming related semi-custom SOC wins ... no Nintendo.

It would be wise to wait a bit and assure that it can compete with project scorpio.

Most probably Sony has planned both launches with a long-term strategy, to extend PS4 life as long as desired and avoid a rushed launch of PS5, as it's now clear that rushed launches can sometimes damage competitors, but they more often damage who does them.

Sorry I meant leakers.

Both slim consoles got new apus, that's why they can reduce the price while still turning a profit per unit. There's no telling when exactly the Neo will be out, but the most recent rumors seem to indicate it won't be long. The production has begun for some time, which is why we have these new leaks about the weight of the neo being 4.5 kg.

Now everything is pretty much speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait 1 more week to know for sure. Unless more leaks come up before that

The bigger argument for new APUs is probably the fact that the new consoles are smaller. It probably requires APUs that generate less heat, thus new APUs.

props to people who called the 2016 launch
